Yo Friends,
I use the photo frames from Ikea, cheap and in all sort of sizes with a nice woodcolor, some sanding and color, and a finish with some varnis.

Besides all they above suggestions I have also gone to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchased round finger-joint pine table/stool tops. Relatively cheap and they are extremely thick and durable. Can be finished within a day to any color stain or paint with a fast sanding, staining, and then poly. They are generally kept in with the stair treads/railings.

For my current dio, I made a frame out of pine, and made my dio separately on a piece of hardboard. When/if I finish it, I will just put the dio into the frame! This means no masking, leaking, ruining base, etc!

im fond of using picture frames. other things that can be use are the pieces of wood you can buy at walmart/home depot that would be used for either painting artsy stuff on or using to hang house numbers on. they are also used for plaques as well.

I use 2mm thick foam board as a base and then put it on a picture frame without the glass which I get it done from a local photo framing shop
