Hi,
What would be a good colour to start with for an M48 ? I'll be using acrylics ( Model Air/Polly Scale/Gunze)
Thanks in advance
Pete

I like to use a mix of Model Master Olive drab and Green Drab for this era. This darker shade is what I actually saw tanks using at Ft. Knox in the late 60's early 70's.

I like to use TAM XF62 or XF61
You can also use Vallejo Model AIr acryl 0156 and 016 I think it is.
The TAM colors are flat the Vallejo Model Air ones are semi gloss.
Cheers

The wartime Olive Drab didn't change much in pigment after 1945, but the postwar paints were semigloss, which "reads" darker. Also, some Cold War era divisional commanders ordered that the OD be mixed with black, simply because they liked the look, so some units were extraordinarily dark (I saw the last OD M60A1 tanks at Fort Carson, Colorado before the MERDC schemes were applied in 1975, and the paint looked like Luftwaffe Schwarzgrun).
Tamiya's Olive Drab is a good match for basic US OD, and you can darken or satin finish it to suit your project.

Does any one know the FS number for this color?

Marcel, just pick your poison. All of the hobby paint makers have Olive drab. You can get it in acrylic or enamel. As been pointed out ad nauseum, there are a myriad of different shades due to loose FS standards. It varied by manufactureer and even batch throughout it's long use with the US military.

I vary my US stuff by mixing it with medium green, dark green, pale green, and green drab.

For referance, here is a pic of my 67' M715 and 67' M35 both painted with 24087 semi-gloss OD green.
