On figures I prime with Citadels Skull White or Chaos Black from their spray cans, depending on what colour the subject will have and what techniques I will use. I paint with Vallejo acrylics mostly.

I usually base coat my armour flat black. But like Andreas, it depends on subject too.

I wholeheartedly agree!!!!! I've been using Polly Scale Steam Power Black for years now, and I've managed to convince all my modelling friends, that this 'satin' black is the 'bees knees'. The ideal primer coat, diluted with Tamiya thinner about 50 -50, it will clearly show the flaws on your model. It is a very smooth paint, but like all Polly Scale paints does tend to dry out quicker than most acrylics, so be prepared to clean out the airbrush after every use. (which you should anyhow!)
