Hello,
Here you have a couple of photos of "Tactical Withdrawal", a small dio made by yours truly (figure modelling) and Jaume Ortiz (figure painting).
Human figures are major reworks/scratchbuilt from Dragon pieces, plus additional superdetailing. Horse began life as one of the pair in Esci's Wagon, although almost nothing remains of it.
Hope you like it.

You must have had hard time on reworking the figs.
Best,
Julien

If you have additional pics (views) of this dio, it would make a great Model on Display for Armorama's home page. If you are interested please email me. Thanks.

Poor buggers, they don't look happy at all. :-) Very nice scene, love the snow, very slushy looking! Nice mix of mud and snow, I really like this alot! Only thing I notice though is the guy pushing the gun, he's got no gloves on, they're gonna have to peel his hands off of the metal later on...but then again, it shows the desparation of the time...."get outta here anyway possible!"
great work!

Hi Daniel!
I agree with Kelly, I really like the look of the snow, mate, looks as if it's above freezing and the snow is melting slowly...what did you use to get this effect?
Overall, good dio, lots of action, good story...thanks for sharing!

Aw Daniel:
Come on, don't be a desert rat. . . jussssss kiddin :-)
:-) :-) you gotta show us more pix than just two of
that super diorama. Just a great execution of the
slime, muck, wet mud and the whole biz of the
Wehrmacht dudes pushing and that horse pulling.
Wow, it was a great idea to add that "horse blanket",
I wouldn't have thought of that. I, for one, am always
glad to see animals used in a dio altho I think
animules are not easy as people to paint — and make
them look realistic.
So pretty please. . . . with sugar on it? Won't you
post some more pix of this fine piece of work. Mkay?

Excellent craftmanship and painting - if only I could do something like that.
However, the figures look much too clean.
Imagine how white uniforms would look after dragging a cannon through wet mud like that.
The uniforms and the horse blanket would be soaked in mud instead of being almost shiny white.

Daniel,
You and Juame make quite a team. I've been seeing this dio on various sites with photos from the show in Spain the other weekend. Your dio really caught my eye. I really like the struggle aspect...fighting the weather, fighting the hill, fighting the mud and snow , fighting the inevitable defeat. You caught it all! Congrats on a wonderful piece.
Cheers,
Charles

Very nice.
Now build a similar scene with French troops dragging a 12 pounder and you have bookends. Would make a great historical statement about the past and failing to remember it.

It may be a small dio but its definitely Big on details, and excellent details at that. The poses definitely set the mood of the piece.

Bingo! Agreed here, but hey, the figs look to be too nicely painted to cover in mud... So I suggest swapping the figs for badly painted ones with muddy clothing, and keeping these for something else...
Just kidding :-)
Really love the diorama layout. The ramshackle fence is a nice touch, and the snowcover ties it in well with the bleak rocks...
You really get the feel of hard yakka here!
But the fig with the horse could maybe have looked over his left shoulder a little, as it seems the other 3 (esp. the pointing fig) are involved in a momentary incident, which he is not a part of? Just a thought, but I otherwise love it!
Cheers

Hello,
I'm sorry for the delay on replying, it has been an intense "real job" week.
Some answers:
The snow was made with marble powder mixed with Andrea's snow, together with gloss varnish, in different proportions depending on the place.
The horse covering was fashioned with Milliput 2-part putty (the superfine variety), rolled very thin.
We know the figures should be much more muddy, but here we decided to exercise a legitimate appeal to artistic license. True, it would have been more realistic to show them covered in muck, but from an aesthetic point of view, it would have been scarcely attractive and would have obliterated too much of the modelling and superdetailing, and Jaume's painting skills would have been much less in evidence. So, we opted for a compromise.
I am sorry we can not post more photos - this diorama is scheduled to appear as part of a published work, and we are not authorized to do so.
Thankd for all the comments,
Daniel
