I normally build Tanks so i've not really encoutered this problem before!

But how do you create a realistic coat of dust and wiper marks on a windscreen?

I have a tamyia Willys Jeep in the process of been build and would like to try the effect on that.

Many Thanks.

Low tack tape will work.. I use a compass.. With the pointy bit at the "pivot" of the wiper arm to the closest part of the blade.. Transfer that to the tape and make a circle. Then do the same with the farthest edge of the blade.. Make another circle using the same point in the frist cirlce.. Cut ot the center hole, cut off the outer bit of tape. Then just figure what length you need to cover the windshield and cut it out.. Afix to the windshield and paint..
To paint on your dust, determine what colour you want, thin it about 70 or 80 % and lightly dust it on... Build it up in layers as opposed to one heavy coat..When dry, peel off the tape. Hope this helps...

Creating the wiper marks is as Dave mentioned. In the absence of a compass, free hand can work as well. With rain and dust build up, achieving a perfect semi circle can be hard so it really depends on the type of effect you want to portray.

In terms of giving it the actual dust look, i sprayed a thinned layer of matt clear coat on the glass itself. Following that i applied a thinned layer of Buff and light sand. All this is done while the tape is on the screen. Allow it to dry before peeling it off. Once dry, i applied a thinned layer of Buff and light sand on the clear portion so as to reduce the contrast between the dusty region and the wiper mark region.

This was the end result.

p/s: The wiper marks was done free hand in this case.
