I am thinking that mabye you could use a color that is close the look of the tarnished part of brass diluted down some. Take that mix and paint in strait over the brass color then wipe it off with a clean rag. It should leave some stains that should have that tarnised look to it. The coat and wipe method has worked for me in the past. It works best if there is a slight tecture to the surface. Try it on some scap and see what happens. Let me know if it works for ya.

I should add that the pressure you use to wipe with is critical. I let the pressure in the folds of the rag do the work but you have to experiment to get it just right.

What about painting it brass....then using washes to tarnish it? Just a thought.

Hi there
I'm not sure what color you get with tarnished brass, but I use Tamiya Smoke as a wash over gold and copper colors for badges etc. It works well to take the 'glint' off. IT's the only Tamiya paint I have. It dries with a slight sheen, and can be used to add depth to folds etc. if you want a quick wash.
Cheers
Andy
