I'm in the process of writing a feaure on just that subject for "the lorgnette". An excellent reference source printed in Belgium. I just got the latest annual issue, and shall review it on the site if anyone is interested.

For the leaves read the topic leaves in the diorama talk,4 the trunk use whitteled chop stix or a 1/4" balsa strip, score it with a small saw blade, then paint roof brown,ad watered down white glue then hand sprinkle or with a tea strainer tan/brown sawdust for railroad models at your hobby store, knock off all lose sawdust then paint with dark paint-thinner wash.
Dead needles on the ground for realism.

That's pretty much how I made the "pines" in this dio: http://www.ipmsgreatplains.com/Gallery_BobKerr.htm
I bought the branch material at a craft store. I believe it was called "Plumosus, green" and sold for about $5 a bunch -- enough to make 5 or 6 12-inch trees.(more, if you make the branches a bit sparser).

Just saw the article. Not bad. Look pretty real to me. He's right. Simplicity is the best way. I think I'm gonna try this method.
By the way.I've seen his site. Pretty nice models he's got. Very modern.
