I was browsing through the GM Jordi Rubio section yesterday and noticed they have several new items for the Trumpeter KV-1 and KV-2 kits, some that are just barrels and some that are barrels and screens.

The GM description isn't all that helpful, it just lists a year and an Early or Late designation. I have two Trumpeter KV-2 kits in the stash. The KV "Big Turret" TSM311 kit and the KV-2 TSM312 kit.

My question centers around the fact that the JR barrels are described in this fashion:

JRU79 Soviet KV-2 1941 Late 152mm M10T Gun Barrel
JRU83 Soviet KV-2 1940 Late 152mm Gun Barrel

Now GM has a third listing that includes PE grilles that goes like this:

JRU84 Soviet KV-2 1940 Early 152mm Gun Barrel

I'm assuming that the Late description on the JRU83 is really supposed to read Early. If that's true, would the JRU83 be an appropriate barrel for the "Big Turret" kit and the JRU84 be appropriate for the "standard" kit? The references that I have are great for photos but unfortunately are in Cyrillic so it's difficult for me to determine whether or not the M10T designation is a deciding factor if both barrels can be used, only one, etc.

Appreciate any help/info before making a decision.

No, it wouldn't be, the JRU84 would be for the 'Big Turret' and JRU83 for the 'Standard' KVII...Jim

Hello.
I looked into numerous Soviet military books, and in every book I found the same informations: every KW-2 was armed into the M-10 obrazca (the year of the production)1938 howitzer (quite new gun). About Soviet gun signatures T and S: The "T" means takowaja (tank) and "S" samochodnaja (self-proppeled), but this marking was used only then gun assembled was both tanks and self-proppeled guns.
For example: Soviet 122mm Gun D-25 used in the tank JS-2 and JS-3 had the signatures T and used in the self-proppeled gun JSU had the signatures S. In the case when gun was mounted only into tanks, this mark was not used.
Sorry for my English
Best Regards

Jim,

The JRU84 and JRU83 are the same barrel, just the JRU84 set includes PE grilles and the JRU83 is the barrel only...so that would mean that the JRU83/84 barrel would be for the "Big Turret" and the JRU79 for the "Standard" right?

I haven't cracked the kits in question so I'm thinking the distinction between the Early and the Late is due to different kit mounts vs. totally different guns but I could be very very wrong on that point as what references I've been able to scrounge don't say much on this point, at least not in English.

Szczota,

From what I've been able to find, the M10T was mounted in all the production KV-2s but I don't know if the same gun was also mounted in the prototype which is what the "Big Turret" kit is supposed to represent. Diagrams of the test vehicles vs. the production vehicles do show a different shaped turret and mount arrangement, not sure if the actual gun was also different or not?
