I am finishiong up a Jumbo from this unit that was attached to the 31 st Infantry division in Northern France, does anyone know if they painted the "bumper" codes on the glacis center rather than the sides above the fenders?

This vehicle is in the Concord Sherman at War book near the back. It has the 75 mm M3 gun and sommerfield matting.

In addition, I found what looks like a Jumbo with the earlier split commander's hatch in the same book. Its in the picture with the 75 mm dozer tank with sandbags all over it. I am at work now,; don't have the book in hand.... just wondered what others thought upon examination....

Thanks
Chris

I dont know about the 756 bumper codes but the Jumbo you're speaking of is on p.47 of "Sherman At War vol 1" by Zaloga. It's very small but you might be right. It does look like the TC has his left arm over something that could be a whitewashed hatch and the dark protrusion to his right looks like the other half-circle hatch rather than the fully round hatch of the scoped cupola.

Thanks Roy.

I am trying to determine what the small lettering or whatever it is so I can finish this model (finally!)

The bumpercodes may have been black on a white background - hence the white bar, I'll have to reconsider how I am going to depict this tank or I may have to have it be X2, X4 ... instead of X3!

Gday Chris
I may be barking up the right forest wrong tree here, but do a site search for 752nd tank battalion. I think it was Robert Holt who has compiled a great reference site for the 752nd, and within it he has stated that there was inconsistencies with the application of bumper codes for them at least, with the traditional placement omitted for a single code above the centre of the trans. cover from late '44 onwards... This sounds sort of what you have seen for the 756th, yeah? This was definitely not regulation , but there have been many without any at all, and of the documented ones, they are as I have stated...
Hope this helps some
Cheers
Brad
P.S. Robert is an Armorama member, but buggered if I can remember his callsign...
