Can anyone suggest a paint scheme for the 88mm. The dio is set post '42 or '43. The model is presently basecoated with Model Master Dark Tan. I'm toying with the idea of the amush pattern on the Pz IV's. Can anyone tell me if this was done and how? (ie on just the front shield or all over? Thanks guys.

Well, I don't think I have ever seen the Ambush pattern on an 88, but I have seen green lines on dunkelgelb and green lines on schwarzgrau. I don't know that I have seen references to the red primer or chocoladenbraun on one, but I don't doubt that it could have been used on at least a few. If it's done in Africa, then I would just leave it dunkelgelb.

Not sure if this will help, but maybe here:
DAK
I'm not sure if this is an authentic color pattern, but it does look cool:

I think I may just do it ambush pattern. A friend of mine was telling me that crews of German armoured vehicles were allowed to paint their own camo pattern. Is this true? Anyways I think I might just do the ambsuh pattern, just because it looks cool.

Yeah, they were given some leeway in what they could paint, and like I said I don't doubt some brown made in, too. So maybe you would have seen some in ambush.

Hi Mike,
if you are refering to the German 3 colour ambush pattern (commonly seen on TigerII's, Hetzers...etc)...it wasn't instituted until 1944....the Germans really didn't go multi colour camo even after the camo regs changed in Feb43....at Kursk there was still a lot of panzer grey kicking around..
To answer your question a few ago I had a book with a multi coloured camo 88 Pak43 (the low slung 88)...exact colours unknown
Cheers,
Dave

Hi
The ambush pattern is unlikely, given available reference photos. That doesn't mean much of course, because there aren't many photos of 88s after the first few years of the war. Most guns would be camouflaged with local foliage etc. I have seen lots of photos of 57 and 75mm AT guns, which are emplaced with foliage and junk on them as cammo.
Cheers
Andy

As I'm sure you know the crews of these weapons created their own camoflage patterns and the only limitations they had were from their own HQ's so you have quiet alot of options as I see it
My 2 cents

....at Kursk there was still a lot of panzer grey kicking around..
Actually there were few still in dunkelgrau as all old vehicles & armor were ordered repainted for Kursk. The order's were given and the vast majority of armor at Kursk was a solid base of dunkelgelb ....... or a dunkelgelb base oversprayed with dunkelgrun & rotbraun patterns and some with just a single pattern of either of the latter two. The quote of a lot of panzer grey would of held more true for the entire Eastern Front, but for Kursk and on ...... dunkelgelb was ordered as THE standard color, especially for all the new Panzer IV's, Tiger's, & Panther's that were coming out of the factories and put on rail car's for the Kursk buildup and dueled it out on the Prokhorovka plains.
AS FOR THE 88 .... not in AMBUSH ........... but I agree, it would look pretty kool !
