hi everyone.

a question on the american M16 half-track (the one with the quad .50 calibre mount): was it used earlier in the war, such as in north africa or italy?

According to Osprey's U.S. Half-Tracks of WWII

The M3 with the quad mounted .50 cal on a modified Maxson Turret was accepted for service use as the M16 in December of 1942

The M13 had a twin .50 mount and saw service in Italy but was soon replaced by the M16 as it was unsatisfactory and little modification was needed to build them as M16's.

Also the M16's became the standard US army Light anti-aircraft vehicle in the fighting following the Normandy invasion. Each armoured division had an AAA Weapons company with eight M16's and eight M-15's (had 37mm cannon)

hope this helps.. neither the osprey book or squadron's M3 half-track in action books says anything about the M16's being used prior to D-day.

I'll follow this thread in case anyone else has other information as half-tracks are my favorite subject..

Later..
