I personally think you did a good job on it. The only part i would have improved on would have been the canvas mantlet cover however having said that, i know its not easy working with epoxy sculpt and coming up with a convincing look unless you are very experienced in sculpting.

When i build this kit, i might dry using the technique described for making tarps and see if i can somehow achieve the same effect.

Did you leave out the second spare wheel intentionally?

I still think this is a fantastic kit and a great build overall.

I think your Centurion looks great , nice work on the cammo and the exhuast is really nicely painted and the overall weathering is nice and subtle

As Jeremy pointed out , my only nit pick would be the gun mantlet cover , I presume you used some sort of putty like milliput , it looks a litte on the thick side and the marks where you have put in folds and creases are a little too sharp and uniform , when i use milliput I keep a cup of water for dipping my sculpting tools in adding a litte water softens the milliput and lets you smooth out sharp edges etc

I sure like the way it looks. Was it an easy or difficult build?

hi

thanks for the comments
yes i built it with only one spare wheel, reason was after vietnam they removed one so the driver had more visability.

to build the kit ,
well it is adream to build , but i had a few problems .

one was the AFV indervidual track links,
the net for the back basket
the tow rope wire in the kit is to stiff and does not bend
of course the lack of gun mantel

but my next three are slightly differant, one is my AA Dozer heavily converted
a strv 104 sedish version with engine upgrade
and a 1/25 version of either a strv 104 or the dutch upgrade.

why aren't you happy with it? I think its a very nice build. The mantlet cover doesn't look perfect, but that can be sanded down a little and done over. Overall though, I'd give it a 9.5 out of 10.

Looks much better than anything I've ever built

I would like to build a korean war version. Does this kit have the pieces necessary or do you need after market sets?

hi

i am sorry but it does not have any parts for a MK3 which served in korea, this would mean a new turret let alone new bins and other fittings which were comming into service at this time. but all photographs i have seen are early Mk3 builds,
Tamiya's kit is a Mk3 of this period where as the new AFV Centurion is built so that you can build more countries which had later build vehicles.
hops this helps

Ossie

I bought the AFV Club Centurion last weekend - my first 1/35 model in well over 20 years but I just couldn't resist. One of my older brothers was Centurion commander in the early 1960s and its been my favourite MBT ever since.

I have read your review, along with Terry Ashley's (PMMS), Michael Rinaldi's (Missing Lynx) and Jerry's (Armorama )and I am gathering reference material as quickly as possible. A trip to the RAAC Museum is also on the agenda.

However, your model has really highlighted the potential of the kit as well as a few pitfalls to avoid. The mantlet cover will be a challenge and unless someone comes up with a better idea, I'll probably use tissue paper and diluted PVA white glue. I will also try PE diamond mesh for the turret basket instead of the kit mesh - it seems too difficult to get it right.

Thanks for sharing your model, and your knowledge of Centurions over the years.

I like it a lot. Seeing your build here and reading your comments has convinced me to buy one and give it a go. Trying to fashion a gun mantlet that will look even half as good as yours will be a goal. Normally i'm just an OOB guy, never have done any real scratchbuilding.

Guhh!! *drool* I'd like to see my modelling reach those standards. Really like the exhausts; I note that you've given them that lurvly light grey, 'lean- tuned', look which we no longer see with unleaded petrols.
I'm just happy to see a decent Centurion.
