I usually just paint them dark yellow and after a heavy wash I spray the bottom with tamiya earth and buff colors ...and more washes and drybrushing ..You usually can hardly see the original color once I'm finishes .(if the road wheels have rubber I do repaint a dark gray line around where they touch the tracks ...they do get a final mist of buff though)..hth

In a lot of WWII era films and photographs I notice the appearance of many (what appears to be) dark chips on the large road wheels of Panthers and Tigers. Is this indeed just chipped paint and you can see the metal or is it caked on mud or something else? These are black and white pictures, so what colour would these be?

I guess it is mostly clumps of mud but in each picture it could be different...
