I've seen lots of model pictures that show various packs, bags, bedrolls, etc. hanging off of the sides of various vehicles. Many times, there are no tie downs shown. The packs just seem to stick to the side of the vehicle. (I'm not pointing fingers as I've done this myself on several vehicles.)

What are some of the methods used to show the attachment points? I've used pieces of string as rope to tie down objects on the tops of the vehicles. It's the side mounted pieces that I am curious about.

Most modern AFVs have tied town points at various places along the hull or the gear is attached to grab handles, or other accessible places. The gear is usaully attached with cargo straps of varying width. To replicate this, the easiest method is to wrap your gear with some type of strap made out of lead foil, masking tape, or paper. Some items like dufflebags and ruck sacks are strapped to tie downs with their own shoulder straps as well.

Cary, what kind of vehicle are you building? If it's German armor maybe I can help.

Thanks Gino. Good to see you posting again. Hope your move went smoothly.

Ben, I'm currently working on Academy's M2A2 OIF. In this case, mounting stowage to the bustle racks seems to be pretty easy, but in the pic below of my Abrams, I just don't think it looks realistic with the gear just stuck to the racks.

I'll try some of Gino's ideas and attach them to the packs and then weave them through the racks. I want to try to get them to hang rather than just stuck to the racks.
