Hi All,
Just plodding along with my A3 (early OIF) and I got to thinking.
I've scratched the spall liners inside and stowage bins for the outside (probably not perfectly, but I'm happy with them) and thought:
Does the driver benefit from the added protection from the liners? OK he's got the engine on his right, but only the hull armour to his left.
If the answer's NO are there any instances of crews adding some sort of armour plate into the side bins?
I've painted up some sheet styrene to depict some worn, rusty metal to put in the side bin but thought I'd ask on here before fixing it in place.
TIA

The Spall liners only protect the troop compartment (4 panels per side). So some crews have shown inventiveness :

There is a spall liner sheet attached to the interior hull wall (left side) next to the driver as well. Some units did add steel sheets, and other add on armor for extra protection as well.

Check these out, from Prime Portal.

Beaten to the punch again, even with the same pics.

I have seen this topic come up a couple of times. To me the spall liner is the Kevlar "wall paper" which is "glued" to the inside hull of my vehicle. Hopefully it shows on the picture. Are there more definitions on spall liners? Just curious...

You're only 8 minutes late Gino, and your pics are more useful for details. In fact I have forgotten I had downloaded them from Prime Portal some time ago

Here are 2 pics from Rob's motorpool that show the sliding spall liner panels fitted to US M113A3s :

Thanks all,
The plywood and sandbags look good but not quite the look I'm looking for.

That is what happens when I walk away from the computer for a few moments.

You are both correct. The M113A3 has both sliding spall liners in the crew area and a sheet of spall liner to the left side of the driver's station.
