i am tring to build a 1/35 dio with a radar site and a (s.a.m.) i want mountains or rocky type terrain to be included .i am not trying to build a whole mountain range type dio. i want to add bushes ,trees and hills as well.which lead me to my question. when you build mountains or rocky type terrain ( rock out croppings) are they to be built in scale ? this will be my first dio attempt and i want to get it right before i continue not after i have finshed it .
THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE

Gday SK2
I think the first thing we'll need to know is the dimensions of the dio you have in mind... Only then can we help with what you could fit in it and make it look how you want it to...
Cheers

One way of fabricating rocky outcrops that I have found and comes up really well and looks good is that I bought a couple of moulds made by woodland scenics. You simply pour in some plaster, I used their hydrocel for lightness and once it dries out pops a section of rochface.

I also bought some of their bottles of pigment and get the plaster precoloured.

Anyway its one idea for you.

If you are building just the SAM or radar site you won't have to build a huge diorama. It could get big quick depending on how much of the outcrop you want.
The end result, trees rocks and surroundings, should be in scale in and around the primary subjects (SAM site and Radar site). If you want both in the same diorama thats where you can use some creative license. You could make two hill top dioramas a position them on a shelf at opposite ends -one being the SAM and the other being the Radar sites.
You could postion the viewing angle as a 'front to back' where a viewer can only see the dio. from one or two angles. Then you can use a bit of visual trickery to give the impression of distance.
