hi,

I'm quite new to modeling, and i'm currently encountering a problem with applying a flat coat to the model. Is there any tricks or important things to note?

Thanks

Hi Satrio,

Well, applying a flat coat successfully may depend on various things such as type of flat medium used (acrylic or enamel based), thinning mediums, whether you are doing it by hand or with an airbrush, etc. What type/brand of flat coat are you using and are you trying to spray it on (airbrush or spraycan) or doing it by hand? Also, what actually are the problems you're encountering?

Let me know so I can come up with, hopefully, some useful answers to what the problem migh be.

Take care,

Can you be more specific? What is the problem? What brand of flat finish? Rattle can, brush or airbrush?

Hi there Satrio

not sure what brand your using but a lot of people in that part of the world use Tamiya and if this is what your using there is one Tamiya called "flat base" This is to add to your tamiya color to make it flatter when you use it. Some people have in the past have tried to use this as a flat coat, which doesn't work.

In my humble opionion the best flat coat is Model Master / Testors "Dull Cote" / "lusterless Flat" .. 2 different names for the two brand names but in reality they are the same thing a clear lacquer finish. I use the spray cans as they are easy to use and I've never had a problem with them..

I've used them over Model Master enamal, Tamiya Acrylic, and polyscale paints. The main thing before using esp for the acrylics is to give your model several days to dry and don't apply it too heavy at once.. several light coats are better than a heavy coat...

If the acrylics aren't totally dry before using the flat lacquer the basecoat could crinkle up.

Thanks for all the help,

I'm currently using the Gunze Sangyo Mr. Clear spray can. Is there any difference in operation with the spray gun?

Also, how long should I wait between the thin coat applications, and how do I know when to stop applying?

Thanks in advance
