Hi Guys,
Is it really a piece of 'junk'?

Hi,
it is not a piece of junk but Heller have done a huge mistake in keeping their AMX30 chassis. The turret is not that bad and needs some work to look like the real one.

The hull will require heavy surgery to be truned into a AUF1 chassis. If you're interested, I think I still have a step-by-step build from a dead website. I could send it to you.

Kit was based on a prototype. Usable vinyl track. It is molded with all turret hatches shut. Cleaning rods are molded in place. Turret is missing a keyhole shaped access port on the right side that must be drilled out and boxed in. There is a large device (AC unit?) on the right glacis that is missing on the kit hull, and the waterproofing panels stowed on the glacis are in the wrong position for an AUF-1. They are molded in place and look terrible, so they would have to be replaced with styrene sheet anyway. Pannier side doors are also molded in place and look terrible unless removed and remade. Engine grills need replacement. Eduard has a PE set, but the round, central grill is the early transverse slat style--current engine grills would be a bullseye pattern similar to a Leopard 2. Some vehicles currently use Diehl tracks with end extenders similar to those on the Italian Ariete.
The Concord book on NATO self-propelled guns, "Rolling Steel: NATO's New Self-Propelled Guns," is a very useful resource.

This an APU.

All the current SPG's have the new style tracks along with new sprockets. To my knowledge, only Phebus are releasing the tracks but I fear the sprockets are not in the set.

You can look at my site for close pictures of the AUF1.

Hi guys,

I think that the germans used the AMX 30/155 turret on a Leo1 chassis for testing. Afrien of mine is modelling this right now using the heller turret and Tamiya chassis. It actually turns into quite a cool looking cat!
