Hi guys,

I have been doing a bit of modeling sinds i was 10 i mostly did planes. now i still had some Revell 1/72 scale British paratroopers in my drawer. and i got the idea of making a diorama with them. so i chose to make a street with a building and a little grass field with maybe a tree on it. i used technieks wich i saw discused on this forum. i made some pics so let me know what you think of it

This is the beginning of the bottom with at one side the street.

This is the house i am making.

this is how i had it planed as a whole.

and this is with the roof on it, wich still has to be painted.

only the house has been painted yet. i still have to paint the rest of it. but i will keep you guys posted.

Greetings Léon

i made a basement from cast wich i bought in a hobby shop and scraped out the whole road with a dental instrument. I did it before with a knife wich worked aswell, but the dental instrument was a bit easier to use.

For a first dio it's a great start.

Nice layout and at this scale good job so far. I have trouble seeing at 1/48 let alone 1/72.
Don't forget to scribe in the curb and walk if it's in town. Your building maybe a little too tall. Best way to check is to stand up one of your figures and match it up, doorway, windows, and do a kind of walk through. Or use can use a conversion program and do the measurements. Let me know I have a small program that will do that.
Also think about a foundation and/or rise for the entryway.
There used to be alot of reference sites concerning this time frame but I can't find them through the search. If someone doesn't beat me to it I'll send them when I get home. Alot of great pics concerning the town areas.
Great start and I look forward to seeing some more progress.

i planed to make a side walk. but i haven't excatly thought of how i make my stones. if i make large once or the same sort of coble stone like i used for the street and than like a line of larger stones between the street and side walk wich i raised a bit.and i am thinking of making the street a bit darker gray than the side walk. but i haven't figured out how to make the grass and the tree so if anybody got some ideas how i can do that best let me know.

i know that the building is a bit to tall. when i desinged it i mesured out the size of the door with a soldier. this looks pretty accurat to me. but the windows are a bit to small and thats why it looks so tall aswell. but i think the hight of the building is pretty correct. only the windows are to small.

i am not to satisfied about the roof tho. but i don't know how i else could have done it. and i haven't deside in wich color i want to paint so if anybody knows wich colors the roofs had in that time. let me know please.

Greetings Leon

Hi Leon,
That list of sites is here; Remember Market Garden : Reference Sites
Just as suggestions;
On the building, 1st floor enlarge the door and windows up a little, on the second just enlarge them down, that should take care of the problems, just add a couple of steps at the bottom of the doorway to bring the opening back to the correct size.
You should find some good reference photos from those sites to figure out how you want to do the side walk, windows, door, and roof.
Those pictures you directed us too are hard to see. The jeep looks wrong (I think) and you should find some good examples again from those sites.
Good luck and hang in there, you've got a great start,
Bob

Looking at the height of the building you could do with a set of windows in between the top and bottom and your windows could be with being bigger as you've already said. As you know being a European most old buildings were three floors. Take out your camera and photograph some old buildings for reference. I do it taking pics of random stuff and people ignore me :-) .

Thanx for the advise guys, but i don't think i will change the building anymore. i just see this diorama as a learning proces. and to get formiliar with the techniques. so when i start making my next diorama i will definitly use your advises.

Leon - a good start. In the future, align the tops of the doors and windows horizontally. The window itself can be any size, but it always looks better if the top of the window is the same height as the top of the door.
