After the D-Day invasion of Normandy did the British and Americans drive on the same side? Left or right or did the British drive on the left and the Americans on the right?
Any thoughts?

Cheers

After D-day the Allies pretty much drove everywhere, pretty much in the same direction

After taking a quick look through a couple of Concord books on British armour in Europe, it would seem that when they were not driving down the middle of the road (or both sides) they observed the continental rule of the road and drove on the right. Of course, this observation is only based on a very limited sample of photos.

Gday Kevin
What a really great question!!
Have never given it a single thought really... I'd imagine when there is troop/civilian movement in more than one direction they would obey the local, which is that weird non-left side

The official ruling was driving on the wrong side of the road ie the right a la Europeans.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I guess with everybody else driving on the wrong side of the road, it might explain our slow advance at times

Cheers

In areas where there were convoys moving constantly it would have been important to stick to having one set of rules - the vast majority of vehicles were American, so it follows that keeping to the right would have been the rule. It must have been something to bear in mind when training British drivers.
