Hi all guys,,,
after long time I return to this hobby....and to AFV,,,,abrams in particulary,I've still working on an M1A2 (tamiya)+VoyagerPE+TWMP(Dragon)...it looks good but On the workbench there's another M1...i want to improve my skill and detail it better.
I have these questions....maybe simple question for you....but unfortunately...not for me!!
1)CIP...What is his use?!And what does it mean?!
2)What type of equipment is in the external boxes on the turret?!(left&rigth)
Have you a photos of this...inside?!
3)Have M1A2 the phone on the rear like AIM version?!!?
4)MCD are removeable?!Can I see a M1A1 AIM without MCD?!
5)When the tanks are at rest (not in operation)do they mount
guns?!(H2&M240)
6)What is the color of TWMP used in iraq?!Nato green or Deck Tan?!
7)What are the US Army BRE?!(photos please)Are they that also produce Eduard?!or is it that come from Dragon AIM (Tha long type)[I don't know his exact name...if it has one)
8)If I use my TWMP on M1A2....Can i set also the bre?!or there's a problem of wheigth!?so TWMP+M1A2+BRE is real?!

Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor English....

1)CIP...What is his use?!And what does it mean?!

Combat Identification Panels, used to identify friendly vehicles when viewed through thermal sights.

2)What type of equipment is in the external boxes on the turret?!(left&rigth)
Have you a photos of this...inside?!

Various tools and equipment. Items like the gun tube cleaning rods, tool bag (screw drivers, hammers, wrenches, etc.), cans of oil, small arms cleaning sets, spare odds and ends).

Quoted Text

3)Have M1A2 the phone on the rear like AIM version?!!?

I do not think so. It may be on the M1A2SEP though.

Quoted Text

4)MCD are removeable?!Can I see a M1A1 AIM without MCD?!

AIM are rebuild tanks used by the Army. MCDs are devices used by the Marines, so right now you woud not see an AIM with MCD. But this could change if the Marines ever decide to buy the AIM.

5)When the tanks are at rest (not in operation)do they mount
guns?!(H2&M240)

No, they are dismounted and secured.

Quoted Text

6)What is the color of TWMP used in iraq?!Nato green or Deck Tan?!

If the plow came from Europe, it would be green. If it came from the States or the pre-po site in Kuwait, most likely tan.

Combat Identification Panel. It shows up as a cold spot in thermal imagers and IDs the vehicle as friendly.

No pics, but the boxes are where the pioneer tools (shovel, pick, axe, etc.) and other small items such as oil cans, grease gun, etc, are stored. Crew gear can also be put in them as well.

Quoted Text

3)Have M1A2 the phone on the rear like AIM version?!!?

Yes on M1A2 SEPs, no on standard M1A2s.

Quoted Text

4)MCD are removeable?!Can I see a M1A1 AIM without MCD?!

Yes, the MCD is removable, but only USMC uses the MCD, not US Army.

Quoted Text

5)When the tanks are at rest (not in operation)do they mount
guns?!(H2&M240)

If the tank is in a secure environment and not being readied for a mission, the weapons can and are usually removed and stored in an arms room or other secure place.

Quoted Text

[6)What is the color of TWMP used in iraq?!Nato green or Deck Tan?!

Either sand, green or camo TWMPs were used in Iraq. It depends on where the tank came from and what color it was.

Quoted Text

7)What are the US Army BRE?!(photos please)Are they that also produce Eduard?!or is it that come from Dragon AIM (Tha long type)[I don't know his exact name...if it has one)

Depends, during the initial invasion, 2 BDE, 3ID tanks had the one that is in the new DML AIM tank kit (and in their USMC Bagdhad kit). In '04, the Army started using the same BRE as the USMC (shorter one with two water/fuel can mounts on the ends).

Quoted Text

8)If I use my TWMP on M1A2....Can i set also the bre?!or there's a problem of wheigth!?so TWMP+M1A2+BRE is real?!

Yes, the correct BRE would be the USMC type though. The USMC BRE was first used by 4ID and 1 CAV on their M1A2s and M1A2 SEPs. The rest of the Army started getting them later.

Check http://www.primeportal.net/tanks/m1_abrams.htm" TARGET="_blank"> Prime Portal for lots of M1A1/A2 pics.

Edit.... Guess Sabot and I were thinking alike and typing at the same time.

Great minds do think alike.

Just to complete Rob's and Gino's replies...From Tanxheaven (J.W. De Boer's pictures) :

The smaller rectangular boxes on the front of the turret are used to store smoke grenades for the launchers next to them :

They already did. According to Mike Mummey the Marines get AIMs for a few years now.

The Hoffman is a training device and is not used in combat, ie. Iraq. When it is used in training, it does have a cable going to it from a control box that is usually mounted on the left front of the turret. It is also used in conjunction with MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) gear, a super laser-tag sytem. It has receiver belts with laser receiver discs and a kill-indicator light a as well.

There are pics of 4ID and 1CAV tanks at Prime Portal. They are all sand, as are all M1A2s and M1A2SEPs. Look closely at the pics and you can read the bumper #s to ID the unit.

Antennas are usually left on unless the tank is being transported by rail.

Wowowow...what a knowledge about M1....another thing...what are the "olive drab stripes" around the turret?!not all tanks have these and I don't know what are they and their name also...I think that they have some type of sensor on them but I'm not sure,it's only my opinion?!Which is the best way to replicate them in 1/35 scale?!Lead foil?!Are they in use in the USMC or US Army?!?When the tank is at rest which is the position of main gun?!

Thanks in advances.....

The OD green stripes are MILES sensors used for maneuver exercises. The tank has strips of Velcro glued to the sides and the sensors attach to the Velcro. There is are small black bumps on the strips that are the actual sensors.

Yes, MILES is also used by the USMC.

The gun tube is usually straight to the front and level when not in use.

Many thanks....
So I must think that Miles aren't use as standar equipment in iraq.As you know I'm building an M1A2 and I want to dispaly it as a tank at rest...or in a not operative stage...another thing....
1)about the 4ID&1CAV I've noted that on their TWMP they mount the IMOD mine
detonator for mine plows...right?!
2)Isn't it only a USMC equipment?!
3)Why it's on the Us army tank?!

I've also noted that that some M1A1/A2 has around M240 a gun shield made up of the gun shield of the humvee....

4)Is this a standard modification or a troop "field utility" for urban
patrol&operation?!more or less like Israeli LIC Tank
5)How And Where this Gun shield is mount?!Any photos?!
6)M240 with gun housing-removed.....What is the utility of the thing?!(less
weigth?!)

Sorry for my poor English.....And Thanks a lot for all your replys....they're important for me!!!

Yes, MILES is also used by the USMC.

The gun tube is usually straight to the front and level when not in use.

Normally when a tank is parked and not in use, the gun tube is placed over the back deck, pointing towards the right rear tail light. The turret needs to be in the rearward facing position so the driver can lock his hatch (it only locks from the inside) and exit through the turret. The gun tube is placed over the battery box for two reasons. First to minimize the overall length of the parked tank and secondly, to prevent someone from taking their batteries.

The glass armor at the loader's position is the LAGSS or Loader's Armored Gun Shield System. It is part of an urban upgrade (TUSK).

Sabot is correct. I didn't take it as the tank being parked and locked in a motor pool type scenario. I was thinking more along the lines of the crew just not being on it and the tank is still in a state readiness.

MMMmmmm.....I know about the TUSK but with "humvee gunshield" I mean Exactly the Humvee gunshield....as you can see in angrydog home page..

http://www.angrydogproductions.com/Abrams%20M240%20Swing%20mount.jpg

....and I think it's not a tusk tank right?! In your opinion Tusk is the same improvement of Israeli LIC(Low Intensity Conflict) (Merkava IIID Lic for ie)?!

Hi Ciro, I'm no expect but I'll try to answer some of your questions....hopefully correctly..

The standard and I should think initial gunshields which are seen on humvees -bend at one side and cut off at the lower front corner.. (as in Blast-models set) Based on my measurements- these will not fit on the Abrams.
However I found 2 other versions on Abrams..which I called humvee-type gunshields-- which were done in the field and not standard issue. Like you mentioned "field utility". (BTW these shields of mine are ready for production)

The Transparent Armored Gunshields (TAGS) however were "manufactured" as a "field kit" and distributed to the particular tank units.

The LAGS seems to be an improvement of the TAGS. And as Sabot said the LAGS is part of the TUSK kit which also includes ARAT - Abrams Reactive Armor Tiles and CTWS- Commanders Thermal Weapon Sight..and some other stuff..

Another adaption is mounting of an additional .50 cal at the main gun (A practice seen on IDF Armor) This is the CSAMM- Counter Sniper Anti Materiel Mount which is already in use in Iraq.

And from what I understand, there are going to be more variations of these urban combat kits.. we may also see Abrams with part of the TUSK kit.

The url you included from my website shows the Loaders' weapon station with a Scissor Mount, the same mount which is used on LAVs.

As for the M240 with gun housing-removed.....I don't know why they removed it...but I like variations so I've included that in my product line.

Hope this helps...

The plow can be either locked in the up position or lowered to the ground. The barrel can still be in the position Sabot states, or as I stated, depending on the situation.

Another thing you might want to consider: sometimes when an Abrams is in storage such as at a motorpool or other place where it likely won't be put into immediate action, the tank will have a large tarp over the turret to keep rain, dirt, and other foreign objects out of the crew compartment and away from the sensitive electronics and other equipment inside. The smoke grenade launchers on Army Abrams (the triangular 'honeycomb'-style ones) will have an olive-drab cloth cover over the front of them (the smoke grenade launchers on Marine M1A1's have individual black rubber caps instead) and the main gun might also have a plywood 'plug' stuck in the end of the barrel for the same reasons. Hope this information helps, and wish you luck on your project.

The muzzle plug on Army tanks is a rubber plug not plywood.

The tarp on the M1s in the motopool will cover the TC and loaders hatches(with the gun over the right of the back deck lift loop. ) and stretch to the bore evacuator, the back ropes will go under the #7 skirt and the rear fender tie off on the back deck lift points. the front ropes tie off on the #1 skirt pry bracket and the middle ropes tie off on the bussle rack unernieth the grenade launchers. and is pulled tight, The air inlet for the engine is also covered.
