Hi everyone,
I'm glad to see so many of you expert in that tank. The only problem in that case is that it's hard to get off the line ...
But to clear up my initial idea, my model takes place in germany in the middle of the 80's during the cold war and is based on the novel "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy.
So the M60A3 is in action in the ruins of Hanovre and not in an exercice (like "Reforger")
So of course there will be a lot of stowage on the tank (based on pictures of maneuvers in Europe in that period) and also ruins around.
I hope you will still enjoy my modeling.
The rest is coming soon ...
Eric

Eric didn't mean to hijack the post keep us informed as to how the kit is coming along. Have you picked out markings yet? In Europe on maneuvers we carried all our gear with us so a lot of stowage would be appropriate. Are you going for a tank in one of the training areas or one out on the country side before the fall of the wall?

Here are a few photos of my tank during Reforger 88. It will give you an idea of some of the stowage and junk we carried on the vehicle. M60A3 Reforger 88.

the thing is tank trail dust is nearly white from pulverized gravel and stone not brown. I was involved in the AOAP stateside and we had a lot more dust problems stateside then in Germany but I was in Fulda and we only went south for gunnery. The model has brown dust does Hohenfels have light colored dust or brown? I was the 23 tank for my stint as an E6 so I ate a lot of dust just not in Germany. It was usually white though. Very reminiscent of the scene from "the Good the Bad and the Ugly" when the cavalry turn out to be Union troops instead of Rebs. I was in Graf Jan. 1979
Tom
As I remember Hohenfels has both colors of dust.
The main tank trail (IIRC the one that goes up the hill above the OPFOR motorpool) was gravel, out in the box it was dirt trails.
The only time I was there in the box my unit got wiped out in 5 min.

Back in the old days (pre-permanent OPFOR), the battalion just finishing an ARTEP rolled over and was the OPFOR for the follow on battalion. Rotations lasted four weeks (two as a manuever unit, two as a "target"). We'd go twice a year, spending four weeks per trip. I learned more of the terrain as OPFOR than I did as BLUFOR.
My final rotation there was the first with the permanent OPFOR. It was one of their first rotations as OPFOR and we were pretty evenly matched.
I loved my days on the M60A3TTS and M48A5. You really learned to "tank" in those old beasts.

The 48A5 was a real challenge especially with the old IR sights and the searchlight tank. How many M1 tankers could work with flare illum. Those were the days alright.
I'm building a Fort Drum M48A5 for an old TC friend. I did like the M60D on the TC hatch always took over when the M219 had a stoppage which was all the time.
As for dust Fort Drum tank trails were great for it, paved with large gravel or old concrete state roads from before the post open pulverized from WW2 on. The 4th AD was formed there. Drove M48s up there from1983 till 1989 when we got M60A3TTSs. Ever notice how a covered Deuce and a half sucks in the dust and smothers the passengers. We would go in for a shower run and get just as dirty for the ride out.

Esci's molds (reissued by Revell and Italeri) are correct in the height. The molds re not related to Tamiya's at all and are superior to Tamiya's and Academy's by far. Here is a side-by-side comparison of all three.

Hi,
I'm back .... :-) :-)
Having a few problems with the stowage I want to put on the tank I decided to go on by building the dio and the figurines.
It's a compact dio (18 x 24 cm) which gives the suffocating sensation.
Pictures show :
Then I painted it quickly to have a uniform color of all parts :
While it's drying I painted the figurines :
That's all for today ...
Hope you enjoy
