I' decided to start on my JGSDF Type 74 MBT tonight. I think I'm on a JGSDF kick as I have a Type 87 and 82 on their way and am thinking of getting a AH-1W Corba in 1/35 and doing it in the JGSDF scheme (or the low-vis Marines... can't decide).
I've got a problem already as this kit has a sizable gap on each side of the chassis under the fenders. There's pics on the link below that illustrate this. I can't see in my references where to correct this. Fill the fenders or chassis?
Anyway, here's the progress so far:

Unless you are taking this to competition then I wouldn't worry about filling in the sponsons. It would be difficult now that you've got the hull assembled.
It's not visible when looking at it directly from the side is it?

Actually, the hull isn't assembled yet. I just sat the parts together for pics. Blu-tack is my friend!
I might take it to a comp or 2 actually. But that is not my reasoning for wanting to fill them. The Type 74 has suspension that allows the tank to tilt so that the chassis can be level on a sloped surface. (Click Here for pic) I plan on placing the tank on a hillside so that the back-end is raised. That might make it more visible.

I added some more progress of this. I filled in the huge gaps and started replacing the "tabs" with actual grabhandles.

I added lots more in-prog pics to the build-up. Made a new tow-cable, added tools, and fixed the turret seam....

I added the other pages for this build including the progress so far on the base. I got some HO scale RR track yesterday and began modifying it.

Hello Michael
This is my very first post.
I am Japanese so please forgive my poor English skill.
You are doing some great job on your Mobile Suites kits!
Good luck on JGSDF Type 74 kit too.
I don`t know if I could heip you much but feel free to ask JGSDF photos.
By the way,JGSDF does not fly AH-1W.
It is AH-1S STEPIII.
Single engin gunship with no hellfire capabilities.
JGSDF bought some AH-64D recentry.
Just in case you didn`t know that.

Thanks! Your English sounds fine to me! Great to know about the Cobra. I figured it was a different version. Still going to be a fun kit regardless of the scheme. Glag you like my MS as well.
The only JGSDF images I have are those below. If you have more, that'd be fantastic. You can never have enough good reference materials!

Thanks a lot for the additional images! Those show off some details I hadn't gotten great close-ups of such as the damaged rubber on the treads. The Type 87's in the snow with the chains are great too. I may have to attempt that. I can get the chain at the MechaSkunk store cheaply. http://www.mechaskunk.com You should check them out if you do Gunpla too. Nice detail-parts such as machined aluminum thruster bells.
The only JGSDF decals I have are those supplied with the kits. Those look nice though!
BTW, check your private messages.

Nice build you have going. The pics of the tracks on those reference web pages sure do make me wonder if they are the same as the old M48/M60 tracks. Does anybody know if they are dimensionally similar?

Thanks plasticat!
Does anyone know if a tank could travel across railroad tracks (not at a crossing) without damaging them? I'm wondering since I'mm adding tracks to my dio and would like the tank sitting on them, but don't necessarily want to make it a "crossing". I figure trains are heavier than tanks, but then again, their weight would be sitting on the tracks differently than a tank.

I added the progress I made on the Type 74 the other night before my wife went into labor. It is of the antenna gaurds made from wire and strip styrene.

I also added the 5 images of the whole sheets of Silflor grass from the fall sampler pack. I love the one with the weeds/debris.

Here's another in-prog update... this time the figures since I'm waiting for celluclay to dry and Modelkasten tracks to arrive. The figures are coming together nicely. A few minor gaps, but no huge problems.

I decided to prime the turret, barrel and chassis to see how everything looks. I love how busy the turret is looking. Should be fun to paint! Pics and details here:

I made a lot of progress this evening painting the groundwork and using the Mig Pigments to make the dirt look very realistic. As usual I did a step-by-step for this process. I'm happy with how the dirt color on the base matches photos I have of the Type 74 in action. There's comparison pics on the in-prog page.

Here's some more track progress. I applied my finer ballast/ballast cement mix over the coarser stuff to make it more in-scale and firmly packed. I also sanded the tracks to their bare metal and applied the rust via pigment powders. Next is some washes to vary the tone of the ties. (thanks for the tip BK) I also posted some reference images.

I got my Modelkasten tracks today and upon opening the box thought to myself "what have I gotten myself into?" They're going together great and look fantastic, but there's soooooo many parts! Five parts for every track, 78 tracks per side, 2 sides for a total of 156 track sections. Multiply that by fave and you got... err... a lot of work!

Nice work! Can't wait to see the finished product. I've always like the Type 74 MBT, kinda like the Japanese version of the MBT-70!
