Apologies to those who I've already spoken to about this in the chat room.

I'm building a Italeri Tiger I and want to paint it the yellow colour rather than the green.

Problem is this - the instructions say Model Master Tan, but I use Humbrol enamels and I don't think there is a direct comparison with a Humbrol colour. That in itself is fine, I don't want the tank to be super-accurate, just close. So, the question is, what Humbrol colour would be a good base coat for this tank, I've thought of Desert Sand, Desert Yellow, Pale Yellow, US Tan (last one's probably miles out). I have the Humbrol colour conversion chart now thanks to replies to my other post in the painting forum, but unfortunately that doesn't help with this specific.

Another alternative could be if someone knows which Tamiya or Gun San colour is best, that may be able to be converted to a Humbrol shade.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Roger

If I remember correctly 63 or 64 are good sandy shades.

By the time you have finished weathering your PzKpfw VI the shade would be darker or lighter depending on which theatre of operations you are modelling.

If you are modelling a DAK tiger, the olive colour was known to be used or panzer grey 67 covered all over with dried 'mud' would give an interseting finish (no need to spray the model because visible brush or applicator marks would be a benefit!!!)

What ever you decide to do, hope it works out well.

Tamiya XF-60 dark yellow has always been the colour I have used for WW2 German vehicles when they are not German Grey. I have recently changed to Humbrol and the equivelent clour is # 83 - matt ochre. Hope this helps

If you cannot find a color you like you can alway start with a darker tan or brown color and add white to it till you get the shade you want...

Hi Roger close is what you want and is sufficient. You can go with Hum.93 ( Desert Yellow ) or Hum.83 ( Ochre ). Like SuG mentioned, Model Master 2095 "Panzer Dunkelgelb 1943 " is an excellent choice ................ "close enough, is good enough ! "

Thanks a lot everyone, I got some Hum 83 and 93 today and I have some 63 which looks similar but lighter.

I am sure between these 3 I will get a "close enough" result.

Thanks again

Hi.. Glad to see you found all the help you needed here.. I think that is why I think the armorama forums are the best on the net for model building and related questions.

Favoriso, what theatere is your Tiger 1 going to be in? If it's North Africa I think most of them were painted in Africa Corps Brown It's basically an earth brown color If I can come up with the Model Master paint number, would you be able to get a Humbrol equivalent?
I really don't know if any Tiger 1's in North Africa were painted Dark Yellow

Generalzod - To be perfectly honest I didn't really know anything about these tanks when I got the kit, my first interest is in European Theatre after D-Day, and I got this Tiger I for a change before I go on to build a Sherman. So I don't really know when or where they were used... yet.

The instructions with the kit (all I have to go on) include two sets of Decals and the following info

A 1.Kompanie, SPZ.ABT.501 - Tunisia 1943
B 2.Kompanie, SPZ.ABT.504 - Sicily 1943

I thought I'd do the sicily one purely because the tunisia one was marked as being Field Green (MM 1712) and the sicily one Flat Tan (MM 1567) and I just fancied the lighter colour, not because I wanted to put the tank in a particular scenario or timeframe. If it was based in the desert, I will put it on a small base which represents this but not a realistic dio as such. I don't have a Humbrol colour for MM1567 however.

So in some ways it doesn't really matter what colour I do it, but I also want to feel it is reasonably realistic, and I will certainly find out more about the situations the tanks were used in even though it is not my usual field of interest. I suppose this is how we expand out knowledge.

Thanks again for your help.

Just a little note on tigers in North Africa.....The Olive colour has never been proven ...some are now saying that they were vehicles that showed up in panzer gray and were just lightly oversprayed with desert yellow camo colour..giving the impression of being dark green...(Just a thought ...I'm not going to argue if you want it green ) Another thing I have read recently is that some of the tigers of the 504 division were delivered in dunkelgleb and were sent to Africa in that scheme ...As I say it is hard to tell from pictures but makes for some interesting colours if painting a multi-vehicle dio....Why not
