Is anyone interested in the general subject of Coast Artillery and coastal fortifications?

I live in North Carolina and have some pics of Fort Macon, a very nice third series fort near Atlantic beach, NC. I'd be happy to label and submit them if anyone is interested.

I also have some pics of a collection of artillery pieces at the 10th Marines Headquarters if anyone is interesed:

75mm pack how
Howtar
107mm Mortar
M101
M114
M109
M110A2

There may be acouple of more pieces...its been a couple of years. I think I may also have some LVT pics.....LVT5 and LVT7...also gate guards.

Let me know if you want them.

It's not my 'specialized' subject, but two things really got my interest. Every summer I take groups of students for English courses in the SW of England (Plymouth). Now, for anyone interested in the subject, that whole area is an absolute gold-mine. The reason is simple, because it was of enormous strategic importance (due to the naval installations). It also, in the 19th century, received a number of coastal forts known as 'Palmerstons' . Now one of them has been restored and can be visited and is really fascinating on the basis of its architecture.

The second reason, is where I live. Again, the area was considered of such strategic significance, a chain of coastal forts have existed for centuries - including batteries which were in use until the 1970s - last place in Europe (the world?) to have the Flak 18 deployed!

Finally, here's a link to one of the 19th century Artillery 'anomalies' :

David,

I would be very interested in viewing your photographs. Were you planning on posting them here on Armorama for everyone to view? If so that would be great. Thank you for the offer.

Doc -

I am in Raleigh....get down to Atlantic Beach a couple of times a year if I am lucky. I've also been back to Lejeune a few times since I was stationed there in the early 1970's (L/4/10 at the time).

Who are you with?

Harv -

I am in the process of organizing the photos...they are on my laptop. When I get them sorted out, I'll send them up for posting on the Armorama web site.

I can't find my LVT-5 shots from Camp Lejeune. I fall goes well this week, I am planning a short trip to the beach to tak ephotos at CLNC and at Fort Macon.

I'll upload as soon as I have something. I may only be able to get exterior photos..they keep the museum pieces buttoned up...butif I can get someone to drop the ramp, I'll get some internal pics as well.

Some of my pics of Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach, NC are now uploaded. Some have pretty good detail of the typical US Third Series brick fortifications. There are 3 shots of a 6 pound Napolean that was cast in 1864.....long after the battle of 1862. There are also some detailes shots of a reproduction of a 32 pound rifled gun on a barbette carriage. I ran out of space, but I have more pics available. As time goes on, I'll try to replace some of the less interesting pics with others.

I have pics of the counterfire galleries, the baking oven, two heavy mortars, the sally port, and the hot-shot furnace. Please let me know if you have an interest in any of these.

Thanks,
Dave
