Friends,

I'll have to paint Denison Smocks (Brit Paratrooper Arnhem 1944) in 1/35.

Does anybody know what colours are best for this uniform piece ?

I did Dragon's Red Devil 120mm figure a few years ago.....I used Tamiya paints.....Khaki as the base colour......Dark Green and Hull Red as the camo colours.....then I used a wash of Burnt Umber to tie it all together....in my research about Denison Smocks I discovered that how they were made was women with brooms........one with Drank Green dye...the other with Red Brown dye....would stand in front of a piece of Khaki material going by them....and they would dip the brooms in and swipe the material a couple of times as it passed by them....to duplicate this I used a coarse brush when applying the 2 camo colours.
My figure won a gold at an IPMS show in 2000.....so it must have worked!!!
Good luck

Dioman,

Do you still have pics from your figure ? I would love to see it as reference material since I want to do the same figure in future when I have a bit more experience painting figures.

Eagle......I have been trying to get a friend to come over with his digital cam to take pics of it.....right now it's in a "How to Build Figures" display....an idea I came up with a few years ago when I was the President of our local IPMS club....it saved us answering all the questions about did we buy them that way or did we just paint them.
As soon as I get some pictures taken of it I will post them.

hi all , i just love the idea of women painting the colours on by hand using a broom , soory but that is bunkum , the truth is they were screen printed , in the old method of laying a pre formed pattern of silk on and the colour then wipped on with a special tool, lift the screen and lay it down to form the repeat of the cammo , only it was not by hand but by machine , an other myth layed to rest cheers ian

So Ian...let me get this straight...you're calling my Great Aunt....who did the broom "bunkum" during the war......a liar then?

Hiya Eagle.....a friend came by today and took these 2 pics of my paratrooper...the 1st one is a close up showing you how I painted it.....the 2nd is a pic of the whole display.....we found these helped a lot at local shows to show people what goes into building models....we did a figure one....a tank....a car and a plane...they were well worth the investment by the club...plus our local hobby shop gave us a break on the price because we were buying 4 models of the same thing.....building them was fun too....and I got a lot of extra stuff to put in the parts box!!!!

Eagle,
I see you have lots of offers for answers. The smock was a three color camo scheme based on 20th Cent. Mil. Uni. by Chris McNab.
If you need I can send a scan to give you a sample. Either PM or post.

Grant,

Those pictures sure helped a lot ! Thanks very much.

Scott,

I sure would like those samples. I already got some of them from Ian, but I guess it never hurts to have too much reference material.... so please do send them.
