Can anyone recommend a good color to hand-paint gun shells? I've tried model master brass and gold and they don't look so good. The pigments are way too coarse. Thx in advance.

I like to use metallics from games workshop's citadel paint range. They work especially well over a black primer.

If you can still find a tin before they all go you could use Humbrol Metalecote satin gold, which is a polishable metallic paint and looks quite god in the scales we work to.
If you are painting German Ammunition and it is later on in the war, it is worth remembering that they made shell casings out of steel as brass was in short supply. That could also be found with a protective coating on which gave it a green colouring, I cannot remember the name of the process, but it was to inhibit rusting.

Thx for the tips. On the way home from work I bought the Tamiya Titanium Gold and a bottle of Floquil Brass.

Any of the above mentioned will work, but if you give it a good base coat of red before you paint the gold it will give the gold and brass a much richer look...

I have used Tamiya spray gold for years TS-21 for propellers on ship models and anything in 'working' brass. One can will last a long, long, time. Two light coats, dries in no time, perfect coverage. Has an orange hue to it thats hard to beat. Brass/gold paints are hard to work with, dry irregularly easilly lift on recoats, and don't last long in the bottle. The laquer spray paint makes life easy. I have had the same can for 2 years. I never brush paint gold or white on anything other then spot details, always spray laquers. It also dries solevent-safe, so going back to paint the copper rounds won't lift the gold paint.
