I have found that using real materials to create a base, and then using the Horizion creates the most spectacular effect when recreating a World War II vintage photograph. I have always used this for photos only, not static displays. I feel it gives a more blending effect than using "scale" itmes such as trees and leaves. This is the Base:
Now here is the effect with the horizion:
And here is the result:
And a closer look at the Horch:

I would not use this type of base for a static, I would replace the trees and leaves with scale items. It is just my opinion that it adds to the realism of a period photo. Please note this only works with Vehicles, not figures no amount of painting and skill can produce these results. What do you think?

Gday Rob
This is a good idea...
Although with some careful planning and building, you can produce a well presented base as a static display, and when combined with a real backdrop can produce the same effect...
Any shots with some natural sunlight hitting the vehicles? Your 3rd pic would look a treat with the side of the vehicle in full sun...
Cheers
