Hi all, Ive been trying to get the faded paint effect on my 223armoured car Ive sprayed the centre of the panels with german grey lightened with Tamyias pink, this gives a nice effect but I am getting this colour on other places where I dont want it in the form of small dots. Now Im using a Badger 200nh and a compressor and Tamyia acrylics thinned with Tamyias own I have the air turned waaay down and the needle way out Im spraying from about an inch away. Can anyone tell me why Im getting these spots.I just cant seem to control it.

One possibility is a bent needle or a crack in the part where the needle sits.

Hi Al, The a.b. is quite new and Ive been real careful having had that problem before, the spots are not large their quite small I guess they could be called overspray, I was wondering if it might be air pressure to high should I thin the paint more when working on low pressures,Ive found that if I go down to 5psi no paint come out.

Could be the paint. I stopped using Tamiya a number of years ago when I could no longer get a smooth finish with it. I use eith MM enamels and acrylics or PollyScale acrylics inthe AB. I find the pigments are much finer in these than Tamiya's. I know there are people who swear by it, and more powert to them. I find it way too temperamental.

if you have large dots of paint around the edges of your spray, i can see several things being the problem.

- is your paint thin enough? if the paint is too thick it won't atomize throughly.
- is your air pressure high enough? again, the paint won't atomize thoroughly, if the air pressure is too low.
-what are you using as a thinner? if you are using water, for example, the surface tension of the paint may be too "tense(?)". once again, (that's right!) the paint won't atomize thoroughly. try using a thinner with less surface tension. here's how you know: if you put a drop on some surface and it runs all over the place, it probably has low, if any, surface tension. you put a drop of water most places and it "beads up" because of (here's that phrase, again) surface tension.
- do you have a good airbrush. if it's an external mix AB it won't produse a fine mist of spray, especially around the edges. internal mix is the best. maybe you just need to buy an Iwata!

well, i'm not a expert, but that's how i understand your problem. i really hope this helps you.

by all means, try another paint. you never know........

but before you do, shouldn't you try thinning the paint a bit more ? or, turning up the pressure a bit, if it is too low?

something to think about.
