Hi Michael,

Firstly welcome to the site.

There are many variations and I'm sure others will give you more, but I use Vallejo Yellow Ochre as a base coat and then Tamiya XF 64 Red Brown. That will give you a basic wood colour then darken it down to fit the purpose.

Here's some examples of different types of wood I've been experimenting on:

Think about how the wood you want to repessent looks naturally and use that colour to bring it to the shade and type of wood you want.

If you are using real wood then I have heard that black ink is really good for giving it that old wood effect but I haven't tried that yet but I've got the black ink :-) :-) :-) :-)

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers

the most common modeling woods are Balsa, bass, and hard woods

balsa is easy to sand, form, and smooth. its also very soft

Basswood is firmer ,sands smooth and shows grain well when stained.

hardwood or Fruit are hard and allow for different textures

if your using real wood you should just stain it and dry brush it
test out stains first on scrap wood before using it on the real thing

Hi Michael,

Sorry for any confusion I should have said 'examples of different types of wood finishes ..........'

All the pieces are from resin kits. If I could build stuff like that from real wood I'd be very happy. This method will work fine on plastic.

Here's a small boat I made: (again a resin kit)

Base coat:

Finish:

You just need to experiment, use light watery washes over the base coat once it's dry and tone the colour down until you get what you want.

Have fun.

hay thnx alot .
in my country there's only 1 place that sells valejio
and its in Haifa, i orderd by mail few colores ,some for air brushing and
few from the Model Color line .

i wanna get in to figures soon 'cause its seems very challenging and it adds up to the scale (I build mostlly AFV in 1:35 scale).

now I'm all over the place

I guess this is not the place for an introduction,so ill shoot ...

firstly plaese excuse the next series of questions, even if a little OT :
thanking you in advance

1.How do you paint the pioneer tools , Inc. wood and metal?
(i paint black and then humbrol metal cote gun metal, polish it a bit ,
very light silver dry brush, and finally black or very strong brown wash.)

2.have anyone tried to paint faces of figures with vallejo acrilics?
is that harder than with oil paints ? are the same methodes apply?

3.and last one , i promise , if you'll look at my pics (which ill update soon...) theres my latest project , its my first attempt with PE ,and im allmost done, now, the instructions say the interior is white ,in my israeli forum (its not my forum im just a member) someone said it is all wrong,
any body knows the answer
?

thnx a lot

Hi Michael welcome to the site, nice looking Mk4 you got there.German interiors were an off white over a red primer,I guess Ivory would be a close colour or you could add some brown to white just to tone it down.Theres a company over here in the U.K. called white ensign they do a german interior check out their web site.Hope this helps.

Hi Michael,

Here's some links that might help re figure painting and painting in general

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/tnt1/001-100/TnT087_Drybrushing_Bamford/TnT087vsm.htm

http://www.missing-lynx.com/articles/figures/mbface/mbface.htm

http://www.missing-lynx.com/articles/figures/mbpart2/mbpart2.htm

http://missing-lynx.com/rare_world/rw05.htm

Scroll down on this one and you'll find somearticles about painting figures

http://www.alphaimagemodelworkshop.com/

There are lots of different methods and I'm no expert so you will have to choose which works best for you depending on what materials are available to you.

Re tools, some are painted the same colour as the tanks they sit on and some not, depends on the Vehicle your building and which country is using it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Al

Hi Erin,

Thanks for the compliment - no mate all hand painted.

Cheers

This is a photo of a project that I'm working on now. The "wood" is strips of evergreen, roughed-up and textured. I wanted to convey old weathered wood. The paint was a base of black, followed by numerous light coats of browns, greys and blues acrylics. A wash of oils, browns and white to finish.
