This will be my first try in painting german panzer units, so I need to know what kind of uniforms did they have in the Ardennes offensive?

Hello Matija

Most of them worn Black jacket, pea pattern jacket, winter parka.
But it depends from the unit : heer or SS etc..
Maybee you could show us the figures or give us the reference.

Best,

Julien

Yeah,I have SS crew from Dragon, which is sopposed to be for eastern front, maybe late `43,`44. They are to be painted in that spotted pattern(don`t know how to call it).
But what I need is SS unit look in Ardennes (and if you like, you could tell me how heer units looked)

Tnx in advance!

December, 1944, was the coldest winter in Belgium in 30 years, and everybody was bundled up. Troops inside their vehicles might have been seen in the basic wool uniforms (either black or printed cammo), but if they were outside, it would be the reversible winter uniform worn by all troops. White on one side, printed cammo or gray on the other. The old Dragon self-propelled gun crew figures were in this uniform, and Miniart also has a set of German winter tankers.

The Battle of the Bulge was a large German offensive devised by Hitler to stop the Allies in the west. Hitler needed troops and he pulled them from various units in the eastern front as well from other areas of the war front. These units were suppose to be equipped with the best for this operation. Just think of the various uniforms these German units wore. The operation known as Wacht Am Rhein, the forces were made of Naval,Heer,Luftwaffe,SS and Fallschirmjager units. Since the offensive began in the winter many units wore what they had when they were pulled for this operation. The long field grey wool overcoat was worn with camo smocks, zeltbahns or white camo smocks over it. The Volksgrenadiers wore some reversible splinter camo/white winter suits over their field grey uniforms. The SS also wore their wool overcoats with various camo smocks(OakLeaf), reversible winter suits of camo/white or mouse grey/white. The pea pattern uniform was also worn by SS units like the 12.SS Hitlerjugend as well as other SS units. Luftwaffe and Naval units wore Heer camo. I did not mean to give a lesson, but merely give the background of the various units and where they came from. I am in the process of finishing a diorama based on some German SS units in the Ardennes and I had to do some research about the uniforms they wore. It seems that German units pulled from the eastern front had retained their winter suits. I hope this helps a little. Good luck
Henry
