Now this is a NICE price:
http://www.hlj.com/product/TAM35282 Almost a third of the price of the kit here in Spain. Question is, do I go for another or not?

Also half what I paid for mine.
Even more tempting though is the Model Art book which is linked off the page - and which is advertised as low stock - do I go for it?

I'ld say if you are wanting to build this kit jump- all over it. If you plan to buy it just because it is cheap and beig cleared out (as in an investment) , well once again that is up to you. Me, I have absolutly no interest in prewar stuff . It might turn into a great trader in 5 or 6 years, but we know what happens with Tamiya don't we. They see a large interest and they'll jack up the price and re-release it

Too bad it's from HLJ, the selection and pricing is great, but shipping really kills you. the price of the items you buy is pretty much equal to what you pay for shiping

Considering my LHS has this for $60 plus 8.25% sales tax, that's a very tempting price even with shipping costs. :-)

At 28.52 + 8.32 shipping, how is that outrageous for a total? I've paid nearly that much for domestic shipping. And its quite common to pay that much on eBay.

When was the last time you ordered anything from HLJ, and what kind of math are you using to get that the shipping is equal to what the kit cost?? I have to agree with Mike above, I've ordered from HLJ a number of times and from Japan to Georgia the shipping was no worse than many domestic shops and better than some.

Mike is TOTALLY correct on this. When i calculated the shipping cost it came in at around €10 - little over $12. Last week, I bought some material from an online store in Spain some paint, a Concord book and a figure set. Total postage (minimum) €9.50. So domestic shipping in Spain and the U.S. are more or less on a par.... Reassuring to know we're NOT alone in this!
Oh yes, the retail for the Char in Spain, is a very reasonable

A relatively good price, but how much does the postage cost?

I just got the shipping price/details in and confirmation that it's been sent:
Total price: 28.7 Euros ($36 USD) So how can anyone actually say that shipping costs more than the kit?
Shipping was a total of 7 Euros ($9 USD) - I rest my case....

Jim, whats the chance (risk that is) that you get hit with importtax when you import from no-Euro countries ? - my hit rate so far (I´m keeping track) is 1-3 to get hit - still the kits are cheaper to import even with tax and vat than buy at LHS ... scary ....
Btw, wonder if someone at HLJ is thinking "this is amazing how fast these kits are going" :-)

In my case, NONE. When I win the lottery, i'm gonna buy a fully operative T-34 and i'll bet I can drive it through customs with a smile and a wave.... :-)

I have ordered items several times from HLJ and the way to get postage costs is add all the items to your shopping cart, then proceed to first checkout. This then totals it all up before you go to final checkout.Have had good service from them with well packed items and speedy delivery.
I have also ordered from HobbyEasy,I bought the AFV Club Cent which worked out to around £13.00,with £7.00 postage, ordered on the Friday evening, recieved it the following Tuesday morning, bloody postie woke me up at 0630 to deliver it,but worth it.

Here's a rather ironic point to this discussion. A local hobby store owner can order stuff from HLJ w/shipping and pay less to stock his store than buying from importers and distributors in the US.
Kinda makes you think if the glue fumes weren't in the way.
Support your Local Hobby Store.

well, if you buy the old 70's Gundam kits, the price of shipping is more than the actual kit, thats what I'm talking about. spent $15 on actual kits and $18 in shipping!!!!

And it took TWO MONTHS!!! not on backorder

Well in this particular thread no one is buying any old 70's Gundam kits or talking about them. The topic is the Tamiya B1 bis, and as has been demonstrated the shipping is not more than the kit. As for delivery time, the longest I've ever had to wait for an instock order from HLJ is about two weeks.

I think the overwhelming majority of the 21,000 + site users are buying '70s Gundams. So yes, I think it's a VERY valid point..Or, alternatively, not... :-)
