If I remember correctly the dark green was changed to white for the winter scheme. I can check that out if you want, all of my models are packed away since we are moving in two weeks. I have trumpeters Charlie and I believe they have a section about the winter camo scheme. Or I read it someplace else... where is Thord when you need him!!

In winter, and mostly in the northern parts of Sweden, the tanks were painted with a white washable colour in the jagged pattern as seen in the link from Richard.
If the tank had the four tone camo scheme, it was only the light green and brown fields that were painted white. The meant that it was white, forest green(?) and black-green.

The swedish four tone camouflage was made up of black, dark green, light green and brown.
The three tone is made up of black, dark green and light green.
In winter, the light green and brown are covered with whitewash leaving the black and dark green visible.

Tjena Thord (now that you are around :-) )
Are there any general rules when the all green, 3 tone and 4 tone are used? Is it time periods or regimental or something different that dictates when used? Cheers!

I guess it must be Batman type thing with you Thord. All you have to do it slightly whisper you're name and you come in a flash!! I knew you and Frank would set the record straight.
Hoppas allt är bra med er både två. Jag flyttar om två veckor till ett annat hus i Västerhaninge, där kan jag ha en ordentlig verkstad!!!
Thanks again you two!!

Usually the vehicles are delivered dark green from the factory and are painted in camouflage by the crews.
Not all vehicles are painted, it depends.
Sometimes the platoon commander thinks there is no time to paint the vehicles or the company qm think it's not important.
The strv 122 and the bvgv 120 ARV comes painted from the factory.
The four tone is no longer in use so all new vehicles or vehicles that are repainted are painted in three tone.
Hope this made any sence :-)

Ohh yeah, Great! I get this info after I've finished my 103C
Would have looked fantastic in winter camo!
Would have put a pic in but it seems to be ridiculously difficult!

Is there a set pattern for the four color & three color camo? Can you direct me to a color pattern?
Do you know if they ever played with the idea of upgunning it to 120mm, or IR sights and reactive armor?

Yes, there is patterns for all swedish afv's but unfortunally I haven't managed to lay my hands on the scheme for the strv 103 but I'm working on it.
There might have been thoughts about upgunning the 103 but no trials was ever made.
One thing that talks against that is the limited space for the magazine, the newest APFSDS could not be fired from the 103 because they where too long.
Reactive armour was never planned, the front was protected by the fence armour and the sides by the fuel cans.
I don't know if there was any trials with IR sights.

I got some new info.
There was plans for renovation and modification of the Strv 103 between 1985 and 1994.
Step 1: Laser range finder and calculator
Step 2: IRV-sights
Step 3: Reactive armour
Of these three steps only step one was fullfilled.
