Hello all. Can anybody give an educated guess on what type of tracks this M-12 has?
This is a scan from the Squadron book U.S. Self=Propelled Guns in action. ISBN 0-89747-403-1.
I'm asking because I'm building the Academy kit as this vehicle. The kits comes with the 3 bar, T49?, type tracks. I'm not sure they would be appropriate for a mid to late war U.S vehicle. I was thinking of using the T-48 style, rubber with the chevron, from a spare Tamiya Sherman I have. They fit, I'm just not sure they're the one used in the photo.
Also any idea about the center section of the above photo? My semi-educated guess is that since this is the area of the engine the heat from it may have prevented mud from gathering in that spot. I don't think it's any kind of camo, but I could be wrong.

Would say T48 Chevron rubber
The M12 track broken often due to recoil. Aslo due to the small number of M12 the tracks type was changed often due to the wether conditions to keep them going. So any type track will do.

Rodger,
Go with T-48. I'm using Modelkasten, but don't ask many questions as it is on the back of the bench right now.
As to the dark section, you might be right, or maybe heat frokm engine makes mud stay wet & thus look dark ...

About the dark stain -- it might be from the exhaust. It's centered about over where the exhaust fishtail sticks out of the lower hull side. Of course, it might just be spilled fuel or water, as well.

Hi Rodger
If you use the Tamiya tracks (and I did on mine), watch out for the sprocket, Academy's tracks are narrower than anyone else's and the sprocket needs to be assembled round the track to ensure if fits properly.
The staining in the mid-section could be fuel spillage, the filler caps were on top of the sponsons in that area.

I'm currently in the middle of building the same kit, but I'm building June Gil (the one on the box top). You'll find that there is quite a good review on Missing Lynx which tells you, among other things, which vehicle had which tracks and which suspensions.
Adolph's Assassin apparently had the three bar cleat track as supplied in the kit, mixture of roadwheels, pressed idler and late type return skids.
Hope this helps

Thanks all. I haven't seen that article on M.L but I'll look for it. I've already used one spoke wheel, with the rest the pressed type, and the pressed idler and late style skids. That just seemed right to me. I'll go with the kit tracks then. That also means I won't have to scrounge up some cheveron style spare track links for the fender box. Thanks again.

I'm personally WAY to cheap to buy modelkasten, or any other metal link to link tracks. Since I build nearly entirely US vehicles, which don't need track sag, I'm generally very happy with kit "rubber band" style tracks. Especially when I'm going to be putting a lot of mud on them anyway.
If you can afford the modelkasten, and don't mind the time to build them, then by all means go for it.

If you think DML Magic Tracks are such a hassel, you don't wan't anything to do with Model Kasten. Way too much work.[/quote]
Second this, if you want After market track, I'd go with AFV Club for the Sherman family.
