Hi all,

Quick question if I may, what color/shade of gray is panzer gray? I see modelers state that they use Panzer gray as a base coat and so forth but I have no clue what shade of gray this is. I mean, in my aircraft modeling days someling like a panzer gray would have translated into RLM 66 (which was used in many german aircraft cockpits).

Is there a panzer gray equivalent in MM enamels?

Thanks much all,

RobC

Hi Rob,
All I use for Panzer Grey is just the really dark grey automotive primer in the spray can. I then decal and weather as I normally would, using either white chalk pastel or mig pigments weathered panzer grey to add highlghts and vary the shade.
the auto primer i find is so close to panzer grey it'll pass and by the time you're done weathering, the shade is going to be different than what you started out with in the beginning.

Thanks Kelly,

Now, per your asnwer above, it's close to what shade of gray? I mean, let me just be a bit more specific. Is there an ID number for this color in model paints (preferably MM enamels)?

Or, is my use of RLM 66 enough to pass as Panzer gray

Thanks very much for your response,

RobC

I believe the color is Tamiya German Gray and the MM Color I want to say is Dunklgrau or something like that.

Model Master makes a Panzer Gray in their armor paint line. The original RAL 7021 (variously known as Dunkelgrau, Schwarzgrau or Panzergrau) is very dark, like the RLM color, but would appear dramatically lighter with even a slight coat of road dust.
For a list of German armor colors from World War One to the present with model paint equivelents, go to http://www.miniatures.de/html/int/colour-ral-farben.html

Hi Rob,
Hmm, actually I don't really have a clue, I don't use MM paints, and use only the Tamiya Panzer Grey occasionally. I don't know the RLM # coding, but like I said the easiest for me is just to use the really dark grey auto primer as my "panzer grey" base coat, then weather up a storm...

As far as Panzer Gray goes, any dark gray will do. In my opinion the paints that are designated as panzer gray wind up looking too dark on a model. I just mix up a dark gray and go with it. Like they said above weathering will make a difference in the final color anyway so no biggie
