Ok I've read through this thread
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/1111&page=1

Great stuff, I still came away with a question. I have Tamiya's Jerry Can set and I know it has problems with the handles. I would agree that the can need three handles. When I put the two halves together there isn't much room to add a third handle. This leaves me with two options - 1. Add a thin layer of styrene to widen the can and allow a third handle. or 2. get out the dremel and narrow the two handles to allow a third.

Now the question How thick are German WWII Jerry Cans?

If Tamiya has that right then I have go with option 2, if not then I go option 1.

Thanks

I just realized that Tamiya made two different kits of Jerry cans. I have both the Jerry Can kit and the Allied Accessories Kit. I never noticed the cans in the Jerry can have the handles molded onto the cans. The other kit is a lot harder to put together, those little spouts are LITTLE, but they look much better. I think I've have to dump the Jerry can kit or figure out some use for them where you won't see the handles.

I would just cut the two that are there off and make three new handles out of lead wire or something. Getting one of the newer jerry can sets wouldn't cost you that much but, if you're like me, you hate seeing anything going to waste so give it a try.

Scott:

I wouldn't make those cans any thicker -- they have enough problems already. The easiest solution is to completely replace the entire handle, but if you go that far you might as well replace the entire can because the spout is wrong, too.

This is one case where Italeri really has the better kit over Tamiya. I have the Tamiya Allied Vehicle Accessory set and it is OK, but for a real value, get the Italeri Jerry Can set. You get German, U.S. and British cans, all with three-bar handles and the proper spouts.

Though I can understand Nate's reluctance to "waste" model parts, I think it's a bigger waste when I see an otherwise finely-built and detailed model mounting those crumby old Tamiya jerry cans.

Ok Ok - You should see my 'junk box' I don't throw anything away I even have a switch from one of the old motorized Tamiya tanks

Sounds like replacement is the key! Optimum Suck it up replacement would be the whole kit, secondarily - replace the handle.

Thanks guys.

I second the opinion of Hollowpoint

If I were you I just buy a box of italeri`s Jerrycans. Those are really superb, look good and have correct handles etc. plus the fact that the kit is very cheap.
