When doing research on the M12 SPG used by the US Army in WW2, I found that it used surplus WW1 French cannons plus American-made later production guns. I later found (but afterward lost) a webpage which talked about the cannon and its uses by the US military. I'd love to learn more about this cannon, but I found few results when searching the web. Does anyone know more?

In 1943 and early 1944 my father's AAA battalion, the 749th was stationed in Iceland. They had a battery of 155 GPFs to supplement their 90mms. When they redeployed to England prior to being part of the followup forces into France they turned their 155s in. It would be helpful ti remember that anti-airdraft artillery was part of the Coast Artillery. While in Iceland they got to fire all of their weapons EXCEPT the 155s in anger. My father recalls that when the time came to turn in their 155s they were frozen to the ground.

After WWI the 155mm GPF were used by the 10th Marines. The prime mover was the Holt 5 ton artillery tractor...at times they had to use the Holts in tandum. I have pics from a 10th Marines History booklet showing ammunition wagons that usede the same wheels as the GPF gun.

In early WWII, the GPF guns were assigned to both the US Army coast artillery and to the USMC defense battalions. I have found no records of the GPF's being on either Wake or Midway. They were on Samoa and Palmyra Islands. and were with the various Defense Battalions during the Solomons operations, until replaced by the M-1 155mm guns.

You can find a couple of different resin models of the 155 mm GPF 's at Great Models.

Azimut has this kit: http://www.phpshopxml.com/azimut.shop/CID/f0162ff350c3a55150260846a33d8806/function/itemPageDisplay/shopItemCode/AZI35072

Has anyone ever tried building it? I was wondering how it was.
