Hi chaps,
I have looked at lots of photos but it appears inconclusive as to whether the Sherman 111 (M4A2) used a gun travel lock when used by the British in NW Europe.
Some photos do have them but I cannot be sure of the origin of the photos.
I read somewhere that some tanks had them fitted at the rear,
Any idea's?
Thanks
Tony

I haven't seen the gun travel lock fitted on any British Sherman IIIs. AFAIK they were only fitted to remanufactured US 75mm small hatch Shermans. Fireflys had them on the rear.

The gun locks were introduced late in the production run of all the early hull M4's. The new DML Sherman III hull looks very similar to an M4A2 on page 149 of the Hunnicutt book that shows a very late production tank, sharp cast nose, full applique and gun travel lock.
With all the add on track, stowage and netting it is often impossible to tell if there is or is not a gun travel lock on British M4's.
