Good morning all
I have poured 2 resin layers on my most recent dio, which now has locked my bogged Sherman in place. Now, once the water is down, I need to add a little more groundwork, namely extra churned mud to really give the tank that 'ground to a halt' look... Bearing this in mind, there will be additional mud spatters etc. to be added to the tank, but my question is this...
Would the pastels/pigments dust stick to and discolour the resin water surface, even when fully drie/cured? Or would it simply brush off or be removed with a damp cloth? I need to know what level of masking will be needed...
Cheers for any responses
Brad
Here is what I mean... The [auto-censored] end of the tank is in the drink, so any weathering done on this side will be right over the resin soup...

And here's a fresh pic

Brad I think you will find that multple very thin washes of an oil based paint is the best bet.

Then with a top coat of resin on it will add some depth - especially if you agitate the resin as it dries - the wash should streak through the coat adding great depth.
I have used the acrylic dyes for resin (the barnes range) when helping a mate with a dio and came out great. (I'll see if I have a pic) his was horses running through a creek but simliar principle.
cheers

Another option for you Brad is layering and weathering the muddys with Future and acrylic paint mixes.Use Spackle and/or Talcum/Baby powder for 'body'.Control the mix opacity and separate layers of 'mud tones' with clear coats and this will give you a very rich 3-D depth of realism.
The splatters and build up on the tank can be left gloss for the wet look or shot with Dulcote for dried clumps. One option to that is use Micro-Flat by Micro Scale. If not flat enough, add baby powder to flatten it some more.
You're on a good roll here,Brother! keep on Truckin'!!!!
Tanks ain't right without dirt of the Earth on 'em!

Hi Bradley. I love what you´ve done with the base so far. You´ve really used the base size to the maximum, and all the angles are excellent. Looking forward to more updates!

Thanks lads for the positive feedback!
There's some very good ideas here I can toy with...
But since my last post there has been another dilemma... The 'shoreline' has receded! (Effing global warming!) It also lifted, and I guess this where it was thinnest... I figure to pour my top layer, and if the same thing happens then I can move my mud edge over the lifted stuff to produce a new clean edge? Would this be possible?

As far as masking goes - if in doubt mask right up to the tank. Water is tough to fix as you've found out with global warming

If you do get an overflow of weathering, you can always add a wash to the top of the water.

Hi Brad,

Can't help you much with your problems as i have no experience with this kind of problems but i am following this very interested .
Your dio is superb and i am sure you will resolve this probs. In doubt .. use more mud :-)

As far as the recessed edge i think that this problem is to be resolved with some coats of glossy varnish around the edges.

Cheers

paint a layer of liguid latex (maskol ) over the water - when you have finished all the weathering it will peel right off!
