Hey Harry. I have an article at home from a military machines mag that goes over the restoring of that tank. I'll pull it out and get you the info when I get home.

First of all, that flick had one of the coolest tank driving scenes of all time in the movie. Watch it again carefully. Notice anything odd about the tank? (a T55AM2, by the way) They had to cut a new driver's hatch on the right side so that we could see Pierce Brosnan "driving" the tank, while it was really being driven from the traditional left hand seat. Also noteworthy is when Bond looks down into the courtyard into the tank park, you see a Chieftain variant of some sort.

Its a Cheiftain with all of its stowage bins removed and painted the green that they use.

No, it's a T-55 they rented:
http://www.tanks4hire.co.uk/T55armouredmilitarytank.html Google "Goldeneye tank", some Utube links show up for the tank sequence.

No we're talking about the parked tanks in the courtyard where the T55AM is driven from, not the tank he "drives" through the streets.

THANKS for that link. Those Chieftain tracks kept nagging at me
when I watched that movie. I was thinking along the lines that it
might possibly be a T-55 which has had its tracks replaced (easier
to get Cheiftain tracks in the US than T-55 tracks??).
I wanted to say "Look! A Chieftain" based on the tracks while
sitting there in the cinema but the rest of the vehicle looked
too wrong for a Chieftain.
Glad to have that "mystery " off my mind ...

Thanks Kenny, that would be great.
Thanks guys for all of the answers - I'll look out for the Chieftain tank when I next watch it!
Is it possible to buy those square reactive armor sections that cover quite a lot of the tank?
Thanks,
Harry

I think to clarify
There are two types of tanks in that scene
1) There are T55s and Chieftains in the Soviet parking lot
2) Bond steals a T55.

Hi all;
I's like to wade in on this. First of all, I have no references or articles to quote, just my failing human memory to rely on but I recall 'reading somewhere' that the T55 tank had it running gear removed and was actually driven around on a truck? chassis. That's why the odd looking rubber skirt under the front glacis...it was put there to hide the lack of running gear and to not expose the substitute 'other vehicle' parts. I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly and maybe someone else has better knowledge of this than I can recall.
Cool movie and great action scene though.

One of the tanks in the James Bond flick was an Iraqi T-72M1 restored by C&C Military Services. The restoration is in the September 2003 article of Military Machines International.

Don't think so. This is from the site about it.

This Russian T55 Main Battle Tank was the actual one used in the James Bond movie Goldeneye with Piers Brosnan as pictured above. It had several modifications made for the movie which included changing the original steel tracks to Chieftain tracks with rubber pads so it could be driven on the road, reactive armour was added to make the vehicle look like a modern day Tank and a small hatch was cut out at the front and covered with a Perspex screen so that the driver controlling the vehicle could be concealed while Piers Brosnan was in full view
I thought it was pretty well established by reading the thread that it is a T-55, and that there was also a Chieftain in a tank park, which someone else verified. Is it me, or is this thread too easy to follow?
I think I have to go rent the movie again now.

Mmm, sorry, yes, missed that last sentence. But... the original question was on the stolen tank...
Cheers,

Be carefull. I do not have on on hand to look at, but I would be surprised if the Hobbycraft T-55 is NOT the older Trumpeter kit. Still a good build, but NOT the Tamiya T-55.

You are right, but some people do not bother to read the entire thread. They just read one or two responses and then reply without reading the rest of the posts.
It is a great scene, but you have to just see it for the entertainment value and not try to dissect it for armor accuarcy.

You should read the information on the T72 from that site. Here is the link.

Did someone say they saw a T72 in the flic as well as the driving T55 and tank park Chieftan? Tamiya makes both the Chieftan and T55a which are both real nice kits.
