I'm going to build a Tiger I (mid production) with Totenkopf markings. Does anyone know what the color scheme for the turret number would be - all white, red with white outline, etc? Also, do the markings normally go over the zimmerit or should I block off areas off without zimmerit for markings (crosses, division markings, etc.).

TIA...Kevin

I don`t know if this will help, and i`m not sure, given the time line, whether or not it`s an early or mid Tiger, but in Panzer Colors III, by Bruce Culver and squadron/signal, on page 73 there is a painting of a 3rd SS PzGren Div "Totenkopf", at Kursk (probably an early). That would explain "no zimm" and the turret no.`s appear black w/white outline.

Kevin,
Osprey`s campaign series #16,Kursk, shows the same tank on page 63.Tank #111 is base yellow with a brown mottle, although Squadron`s shows a three tone, I would trust Ospray`s, mainly because it is newer. The 111 is black w/white outline and no zimmm.

I have just taken a quick look through a couple of books I have here ....I hate to be a party pooper but I don't think they recieved any mid production tigers....They had early tigers as seen at Karkov and Kursk and they then recieved lates with steel wheels..and they didn't keep those long ,because these were used to form up the s.SSpz.-Abt.503Lates seem to have just white outline numbers near the front of the turret also repeated at the back on the stowage bin ..No Tigers were seen with the deaths head marking on them .. Crosses were small and usually placed a bit further back than the middle of the tank but not always...Camo seems to have been very heavy on late vehicles but others were just dark yellow and redbrown...I may be wrong about the mids ..I lent my copy of Tigers in Combat II to a friend and am just using Tigers on the Eastern front as a reference..I hope this helps a bit .

markings would be painted over zimmerit otherwise, you have a really good target for a magnetic mine.

3rd SS PzGren Div. Totenkopf before Kursk battle had their Tigers with an overspray of red brown over dark yellow base, they carried the Kursk divisional insignia and the numbers in the turret were black with a white rivet, these numbers follows the conventional three digit number system starting at the 100 for the comanderīs tank. The replacement Tigers after Kursk had a heavier overspray of red brown and they carried no divisional insignia.

Panzer Colors Vol. III

Hope this help you.
