Hi
Have in my storage a nice museum picture(recently taken) from Michael.
A very early M4A1 sent to UK.
Need particular detail of the gun sigth mount. and turret shape in that particular area.
Any help is needed.
I intend to do one of those early shermans.

Gday KH
Now let me get this right.
You are after turret details as described on a tank 'named' Michael?
And it is a M4A1 sent to England to be fitted out for the Normandy landings, or maybe a tester for the African campaign?
Can't help you specifically with that tank if this is the case, but
the turret in this area should be quite consistent; more a question of what it had by way of upgrade...
Why not go to http://www.toadmanstankpictures.com/
Chris has a photo set of a M4A1 with good top shots of the turret...

Cheers

Interesting pictures. I have never seen those two extra 0.3 cal MGs on the bow, but now I try to find my references, maybe I have just overlooked them.

Guys, Michael is THE oldest surviving Sherman and was no 2 (yes the second ever) Sherman (M4A1- Sherman II) and the first Sherman delivered to the UK. It was named after Michael Dewar who was on the UK Tank Commission who were instrumental in proividing feedback to the US armanents industry and who were really the driving force behind the Sherman. It was delivered to the UK and was used for testing and evaluation during the war. It was originally delivered with an M2 75mm gun with Counterweight and later had this replaced with its current M3 gun. The actual vehicle now resides in Bovington - the RAC museum.
The turret is a very early low bustle turret and differs from most production Low bustle turrets in that the guns sight was in a "Rotor" shield arrangement (like the Grants) and not a straight periscope as later Shermans. The hull is also a very early cast hull with the two fixed 30cals in the glacis and dv for the drivers / co drivers hoods. It was fitted with a n early 3 part trans housing.
A picture of it on display at Horse Guards Parade in May 42 exists in the IWM database:

Try an online search for T6 (the forerunner which shared this sight mount) or British Shermans.
This is a pic of one of the very first M4A1 like "Michael":
