hi Mike..i agree with hisham
i got the chance to view the SBS video produced by Andrea borrowed from beachbum. This CD cost a bomb ..
Mind you that this is not a normal video where you can play it on your CD/DVD player. It must be installed to a computer and run from it with the programmed installed.
The subject captured in the video is more of a medival knights era but with helps painting of any figure as well. It has SBS toturial painting with andrea acrylics paints. Maybe useful for beginner and intermediate figure painter.

Hi guys,

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on this one. I have both the Andrea book and the video and I must say that I find the book much more useful.

I find the video misses out on things like thinning the paint and the number of coats applied - it seems to create the impression that the paint is applied neat and in only one coat.

In both the case of the book and video I also feel that they start off really strongly with nice paint recipes etc, and then start skipping steps.

Mike, why not pop on over to Historicus Forma. I'm sure we can help you with all your figure painting questions. We also have some awesome painting features that may help you.

Hi Mike,

Well, one avenue available to you is 100% free check out the painting features on HF: HF Painting Features. There are plenty of SBS's in a range of mediums - oils, acrylics and enamels.

You should also visit the painting forums, hosted by Gino Poppe and Craig Whitaker. My recommendation would be to visit, ask questions, get started, post pics, get feedback, apply feedback, ask more questions, post more pics... and so on and so

If, however, you would like a couple of books - and hey, who doesn't? then here's my view on a few...

Hisham and Zaidi mentioned "Modelling Fallschirmjäger Figures", I hear it's great, and is has been reviewed HERE. (Both Jaume and Daniel are regular HF visitors). From what I hear Jaume also covers some basic stuff. My copy is on order though so I can't give you a full endorsement yet.

Just a general comment about Osprey modelling books though. Osprey tends to be aimed at the intermediate level modeller, and they also have certain conditions for the authors - like fit everything into 46-64 (?) pages. So, IMHO, certain seemingly key steps tends to be skipped over.

I would definitely not recommend either "Modelling figures" (not 100% of this name) or "Modelling WWII figures". From what I read in the reviews on Armorama "Modelling Waffen SS figures" is excellent, but I'm not sure it's aimed at beginners.

That said, I love the Osprey Men-At-Arms and Warrior series. They are great quick, desktop references for subjects where I don't necessarily want to bombarded with extra info.

But getting back to the topic...

As an armour modeller you may enjoy Shep Paine's "Building Dioramas etc". He dedicates a chapter to figure painting (albeit in oils) which serves as a good starting point for painting 1/35 military miniatures. He covers basic principles like the Stop Sign rule and has a brief section on face painting (including quite a nice illustrated SBS). I would say the nicest thing about this book is that it doesn't only cover figure modelling, and that even if you don't benefit from the figure section you'll definitely benefit from the rest. You may also have heard this book referred to as the "Modeller's Bible".

There are various books thru Schiffer Publishing on modelling, and specifically figure modelling. Again, these are all reportedly excellent. I have read one a while back - can't quite recall the name although I think Lynn Kessler (?) was the author. I recall thinking it was quite nice.

Andrea Press have recently announced their "FAQ for Figures". Early feedback (from a figure newbee) is that the book is excellent.

Coming later this year from a Greek publishing house will be a new figure modelling book. Apparently the contributors are well-known modellers - specialists in their fields - and one of them if HF's own Situation forum host and Associate Editor, Costas Rodopolous.'

There are undoubtably many more books that I have forgotten (sorry, only one cup of coffee so far this morning ).

But once again, to reitterate, my recommendation would be to visit the HF painting forums, ask questions, get started, post pics, get feedback, apply feedback, ask more questions, post more pics... and so on and so

BTW, you haven't mentioned which medium you would like to paint in...

HTH
