Hey Guys. I am sorry but this is my second attempt to post this. I'm not sure where the first one went. Sorry. My question is can someone tell me what did the "A" unit names on the sides of the 27th Arm. Brgd commonwealth shermans (52) tanks look like? What colors were they? All my info is B/W and from an angle. I know they were names like AGGRESSOR and AVENGER but was it red over white or yellow over white. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob

According to this thread I pinched from ML it would depend on the regiment within the brigade you were modelling

27AB

I also hijacked this thread since it has a nice pic of Aggessor in it

Shermans

Looks like Aggressor is part of the Staffordshire Yeomanry and IIRC is carrying troops belonging to 3rd Infantry Division.

EDIT: Bit of explanation of the structure of Armoured Brigades and markings. An armoured brigade was made up of three armoured regiments (each of one battalion), they could be attached to infantry divisions to provide tank support, with one tank regiment attached to an infantry brigade, with one squadron to an infantry battalion etc.). 27AB seems to have spent its time with 3rd Infantry Division (see the order of battle in the link in my second posting). Colour of the tac markings depends on the seniority of the regiment in the brigade (regular cavalry before yeomanry then date of raising and so on). Looks like the Staffordshire Yeomanry are the middle regiment in the brigade, which would mean their tac markings are yellow (the sequence is red-yellow-blue in order of seniority). The tac mark for A squadron was a triangle which was worn centrally on the nose above the red square with the unit's identifying number 52 on it. Though you can't see it on Aggressor, squares (B squadron tac mark) and others can be seen in the photos, which gives you the idea. The small circle on the righthand side of the nose is probably the bridging classification (30 for a Sherman).

Hi Bob

If the photo of Aggressor was taken on July 18th when quite a few photos of the Staffordshire Yeomanry were taken as they set off on Operation Goodwood (like the one I posted in the great periscope mounting debate ) , then the infantry are 1Bn Royal Norfolk Regiment.

You guys ROCK! I should have picked an easier unit. I will try to make a stencil and do the name in a white outline 12 to 18" high on 35th scale. I so so so much appreciate the info and time you have given me. One of these days I will figure out how to post a pic to show you how it came out. Thanks again Bob
