Yes the risks, I am afraid, are high for users that may occasionally post their email address in a post or other area that a virus spider can pick up. I have recieved numerous emails (all cleaned by my McAfee Online virus protection) that are sent to email accounts that are barely even known about. For instance today I got emails sent to support@ and
advertising@. Both of these only appear in one or two places on the site.
The PM system is certainly one way to get around this trap. Also the email link on the profile page will only appear to registered users. So...use an email link in your sig line (or a message) at your own risk.
I am thinking that the whole Internet is seeing a huge increase in the number and freqency of these kind of virus attacks. But you never know. Someone could be intentionally targeting certain sites and their users. Pretty petty if you ask me.
