Can I use static grass for small scales like 1:72? Or do I need to use the ground up foam instead? I think static grass would be to tall for regular grass for this scale, but might work for long field grass. What do you guys think?

I think it depends on the application.
Pickleman used Woodland scenics static grass on this diorama.
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/9159&page=1 . Its 1/72 scale.
The grass turns out to be about a foot tall.

I would use static grass also.
Just look at KKeefe 's site. He uses static grass in a small vignette....
1/285th scale !!!!!!!!
Just look and enjoy !!

Excellent work, and he proves static grass works for small scales very well !

I have a brother-in-law that did some time for getting caught with grass and small scales...

For my 54mm figures, I use Woodland scenics turf. I don't care for the look of static grass. It looks out of scale. From a scale distance for 54mm/1/35, let alone smaller scales, you can't see individual blades of grass. I'll add clumps of long grass and other materials (see my Crazy Horse figure in the 54mm campaign results) to give som more life. This is my personal taste and not a reflection on the work or style of other builders.
