What is this ?
Fitted on Humvees :

Or on a Bradley :

(both pics from Flikr.com)
My guess would be some jamming system against remote-controlled IEDs (I'm sure they are not pennant holders )

Looks like that thing being in front of a Bradley's life of fire makes for a tricky situation. I wonder if there is a regulator like in WWI and WWII aircraft that keeps the gunner from blasting it away in the heat of the moment.

Thanks for the replies, DJ and Jeff .

The one you are viewing is the micrwave based item that is great against a non-command detonated device. If the clown has the triggering device in his hands, this baby is useless.

What's the reason why it won't work if the insurgent has the triggering device on him if I may ask?

That information is classified,.....I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you

cheers

P.S. OPSEC anyone?

I second that one Rick! Showing pictures and actually tell how it really works are two different things but I'm sure the COL(R) and the young cadet(Jeff) both know that.

Even though I am pretty sure you can find it somewhere on the net know.

I knew the second that this came up, that OPSEC was a big issue here because this discussion has already come up before and these devices are highly classified, hence the reason my question had nothing to do with the device itself but with the cannon. But thats all I have to say about that. Thanks Pete. And you are right, the answers are not big mysteries nor hard to find, but there is no point to propagating it here and I hope that how these things work is not even hinted at.

Perhaps in the interest of "safety" the "how it works" part of this discussion should be left alone. Just call it an IED detonator and leave it at that. If you want to model one, go for it. How it works isnt important. Unless of course, there is some amazingly skilled member here who can model a "wroking" one :-)

hehe, Gary, thats about what its come down to. This would definitely be really cool to model at least externally. The problem is modelling the internal module that would go inside the humvee or Bradley for controlling. But hey, just close the humvee up and though you don't even have to worry about it with a Bradley.

One thing to consider is why risk lives over the accuracy of a model. In the ongoing game to protect troops against IEDs, hopefully technology can keep up as the bad guys try new things. I don't care if the basics are somewhere on the 'net, it sure isn't worth making things easier. You got your photo of an interesting device related to IED protection operated by a little black box. Unless you are counting rivets and knobs, make it look reasonable and you should be okay.

Personally, I think in the heat of the moment, that little pole is the LAST thing the gunner needs to worry about.

That's OK for me for sure ! Retrospectively glad I didn't ask how it works
