i am currently in the process of building the Dragon 251/1d and am wondering about populating it once complete.

Hi there
Great work on the kit. I haven't built any figures in 1/35 yet so I can't really comments too much. I think dropping the pointing guy was a good call. Have a look on Google Image to see how the crew distributed themselves around the vehicle.
The Sd.Kfz is painted very well. Here's mine.....
As for foliage, I think you should keep it simple, check out Verlinden for some good bases or search this site for a how to. I have seen some on here.....sorry no link.

thanks
nice 251, my next one will probably be the earlier model in panzer grey.
i've looked at a couple of forum entries on here and found some good ideas for foliage, i'm trying the wire armature and parsley idea at the moment
i don't plan to over -do it, just a couple of branches to give an impression rather than a fully hidden vehicle
heres the inside of the halftrack before i fitted the top
sorry i only discovered how to post photos earlier today so i'm posting at every opportunity

Ted,
No, I don't think the 251 looks too populated.
maybe put the hollow figure (4th pic) on the other bench seat to even it out a bit. I can't see why they'd all want to sit cramped together on the same bench if they didn't have to.
It just proves how small these vehicles really are for the ammount of troops they had to carry (and I know youcan never cram plastic figs in as the real people would squash together.
What make are the 251 figures?
Tom

i tried putting the two seated figures on opposite sides but there is going to be a guy standing on the seat and leaning against the side with his hands in his pockets and he got in the way
the figures are as follows,
a mixture of tamiya, legs and arms from the tank crew at rest set, body from the dragon hohenstauffen set, boots from andrea
again, legs from the tamiya tank crew with boots from the dragon half track crew, body from dragon, head from the trumpeter ss set and arms from miniarts soviet tank riders
this guy is made up from the same as the last one but with a hornet head
this chap is from the trumpeter set, with a tamiya arm, he will be holding his canteen, is holding, i haven't taken a new photo yet
as you can see quite a mixture from an overflowing spares box
all equipment and weapons are from dragon

Hi Ted. Some really nice looking conversions ... great poses ...they´ll look great when painted up. Ive seen quite a lot of pics, with vehicles that seem to be very heavily populated .... better to be squashed than having to walk .... so the 4 or 5 you have planned should be no problem.
A lot of your pics are very blurry. Maybe you should get a piece of card ... blue or white .... as a neutral background. Your camera appears to focus on things in the background, and leaving your work, out of focus. Pity, as it would be great to see the details better!

Bear in mind that the Sdkfz251/1 was supposed to carry 12 soldiers, 2 crew & an infantry squad of 10 in the back! So yes, they would be pretty squashed in! On the same subject, there's a quite well known picture in the Bender/Taylor SS series of an SS Horch 1a with at least a dozen guys on it! If you know how much space the Tamiya "German soldiers seated" used to take up in this vehicle, you'd wonder where the others would fit in! I tried something similar using the legs of the crew figures from the Tamiya Sdkfz 7, they were the only ones you could "pack in" tight enough! There's also a well known photo of infantry from "Totenkopf" crammed in the back of a Krupp Protz; it's definitely "standing room only"!I've also built a Steyr with a crew of about 7, & still ended up with 2 guys sitting on the back! These latter were resin figures which were meant to fit a Mercedes 1500. So I can feel for your problem, but persevere, a well loaded vehicle looks quite impressive!

The 251 looks great. Good conversion work on the figures. Can't wait to see it finished!

It looks good, Id say go for a fair few figures too. I never got as far as adding figures to my 251, am waiting for a diorama to reveal itself to me in which I can use it!

it looks like the figure count has now gone up to 7, i got two boxes of the Master Box German tank hunters yesterday and already 2 of them have been chopped up and added, although one is actually standing on the halftrack rather than in it................................
the Master Box figures are quite good, obviously hornet heads have been added but apart from tht they are dammn good
