i think the hair of a very long brush with thick bristles would do just fine.
length may be about 1 or 1.2 inches or about 2,5, 3 centimetres.

From Woodland Scenic ...

FG172
Field Grass - Harvest Gold (8 gr.)
Price: $3.49

FG171
Field Grass - Natural Straw (8 gr.)
Price: $3.49

FG173
Field Grass - Light Green (8 gr.)
Price: $3.49

I've picked this up at Hobby Lobby if you have one of those around you. It's a model train supply stuff mostly but it works fine for 1/35 scale I think.

Thanks Dave, but the stuff that Woodland Scenics sells is deer hair. And it is way overpriced for a little bag of hair.

Want to save some money? Go to your local sporting goods store that sells fly tying stuff and your will find deer hair or bucktail. You can get it in the natural brown and white, or colored in every shade you can imagine. I bought a huge bag of assorted parts and pieces for about $6 at my local Cabelas. About half of the bag is good for modeling, the other half I will use for tying flies.

Zig -- drop me a PM and maybe I can send you some hair that will meet your needs.

Here's a good trick I used in my Kelly's Heroes dio. Take three slightly different colors of hay colored thread. Depending on whether you are making hay bales or hay piles, wrap them around your finger and cut them almost even.

The three colors will break up the sameness and give some depth to the hay pile. I secured it with matte medium. Then, for older hay, I drizzled some really washed down weathering color.

Yea, it's high I forgot about Cabelas. The last time I bought any Woodland stuff I got it at Hobby Lobby on one of there 50% off sales and loaded up on it. I think I paid about $1.40 a bag. As the price I listed is the MSRP and not what they really sale it for. I doubt I'll need anything for years I have boxes of dio stuff from woodland. Now all I need is time to make some again. LOL

For something really cheap you could try using hemp rope bought at any hardware store. Just cut it to the right size and untwist it. Just make sure it is a rope made up of individual fibers and the rope will last you forever.
