This week end I was hit with a good dose of 'Famo fever' when I happened to go to a local model shop and found one of these kits at such a good price that I couldn't afford to walk out of the store without it. Yeah, like I need another model to build! I have 3 un-opened boxes out in the garage now. But what can I say, I guess I'm something of a model-holic anymore.

Anyway, I was doing some looking at the various detail sets out ther from Aber and others and was wondering if any these are worth the money they cost. I can't really see doing that much to this kit as it is so nice and detailed straight out of the box as is. So I thought I would just throw this out and see if anybody out there has any suggestions on which, if any, of these after-market add-ons for this vehicle they would get for it if they were building it, or have built it themselves.

Thanks and take care, sgirty.

If you are not too bothered about doing that much to the kit then forget ABER. The PE sets are VERY comprehensive, they cover the engine wheels, cab, etc etc...
The Tamiya kit builds into a very nice model without anything.
If you want to get something extra go for a tamiya spade:

I think Royal Model also makes a simpler and cheaper PE set for the Famo that you might be interested in. You are right though, Tamiya has already loaded this thing with tons of detail. If you want to show the engine it might be a good idea to have some wiring, but you don't need a PE set for that.

Search out for Fabien Descamps, Terry Ashley (PMMS) and their models of the Famo.
If you need anything else, I can help...but have no scanner

SO to recap...I would opt for the Tamiya spade and that's it really. You could do the Bilstein crane if you had the money...FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like there's plenty to choose from. I have enough 'goodies' to fill in the bed okay just from the spares box, but the spade does look interesting. And the Roayl Models Famo detail set too. Such are the choices for the modeler of German AFVs and their support equipment! Plan on showing it towing a disabled tank, so don't know if the spade will work here or not.

But I have to say I am really impressed with this kit! The molded-in detail is outstanding. I made a real good choice buying this kit.

Thanks, and take care, sgrity.

Of course, one thing you'd really find useful would be a set of tool brackets. Aber and Royal Model make some. There are several tools with the kit that could use some nice PE brackets (naturally, the full detail sets would include these).

I built mine almost straight out of the box and was really pleased with it..the only thing I did to mine was make a cover for the windshield out of aluminum foil..If you look back about 10 or 11 pages I guess in the rivet review you can see what this kit will look like oob with odds and ends added from the parts box...I would add a picture but don't know how to do it yet...lol
I know you'll love this kit !! OPPS Just checked I'm on page 17...lol

If you is gonna build the Famo as a recovery, then *hic* get the spade *hic* it'll look cool and more to the point realistic as the recovery vehicle had a spade to help "ground" or stabilise the Famo whilst "reeling-in" a tank with the winch. Admittedly a small tank mind you!!!!!!!!!!*hic*

I'll pick up my FAMO if it ever stops snowing! I searched various sites and mags for info on aftermarket on this beast and have come up with the following : there are two Aber sets but the basic seems sufficient, lots of clamps, clasps, etc.,the Eduard is said to be a great beginners set,not as extensive as Aber but with a bunch of tools for those drawers(and you can never have too many tools),there's the crane but it's more expensive than the kit itself,Royal Models looks nice and it has resin pieces as well as the PE,and finally Cromwell Models have front and cargo area tarps both open and closed as well as a late model conversion, which is primarily new cut back front fenders.Personally,I've ordered the Aber basic set and i'd love to get the Cromwell closed tarps. They look to be really nicely done with a healthy sag to them. The late model conversion will have to wait for my finances to catch up.I've also heard that Tiger is working on one,so we'll see if there's a signifigant difference.I can hardly wait to open this beauty now that I've read so much about it.To kill time I've finally done the SdKfz 7.Boy,does it need a detail set! Still,it's a Tammy so there's nothing wrong with it. Happy Plastic,JOCK
